In winter, the air in our rooms is often dry. Plants take up water through their roots and let most of it go into the air from their leaves.
So plants can make a room more humid. In one office study, 18 ferns raised the humidity from about 29% to 49%. But one or two plants are not enough, because fresh air keeps coming in and out.

Q1. What is the passage mainly about?
Q2. How many ferns raised the humidity to about 49%?
18 ferns raised the humidity from about 29% to 49% とあるので A。
Q3. In this passage, "humid" means ...
dry(乾燥した)の反対なので B。名詞は humidity(湿度)。
Can houseplants make a dry room more comfortable? In theory, yes. Plants release most of the water they absorb into the air through their leaves, a process called transpiration. In a 2024 office experiment, median humidity was 29.1% with no plants, 38.9% with five Boston ferns, and 49.2% with eighteen.
However, another study found that one plant releases only about 35 to 65 grams of water a day, and most of it is lost through ventilation or absorbed by walls and furniture. Since modern homes constantly exchange air, you may need about ten pots to make a real difference. A humidifier is far more powerful, so plants should be seen as weak helpers.

Q1. What is the passage mainly about?
Q2. What was the median humidity with five Boston ferns?
38.9% with five Boston ferns とあるので B。
Q3. Why do one or two plants have only a small effect?
most of it is lost through ventilation or absorbed by walls and furniture とあるので A。
Water a houseplant, and nearly all of that water will end up in the air. Plants transpire most of the water they take up, so in principle they do humidify a room. The question is how much. In a 2024 PLOS ONE study, Jiang and colleagues rotated three offices through three conditions: no plants, five Boston ferns and eighteen ferns.
Median relative humidity climbed from 29.1% to 38.9% and then to 49.2%, while temperature and carbon dioxide showed no clear change. Those numbers come with conditions, though. The plants were leafy, water-hungry ferns in a dry office, and eighteen pots amount to a small jungle. A 2025 study in a naturally ventilated office measured roughly 35 to 65 grams of water released per plant per day.
Humidity rose by a small but statistically significant amount, and most of the moisture was lost to ventilation or absorbed by walls and furniture. A six-month study in a large open-plan office also found smaller increases than theoretical calculations had predicted. Evaporation depends on light, temperature and how dry the air already is, so results vary from room to room. When a room is seriously dry, a humidifier is still the main tool.
