Is listening to a lot of easy English useful? Researchers in Taiwan tested this for 13 weeks. Students studied 10 easy English books. One group only read, one group only listened, and one group read while listening.
The group that read while listening improved the most steadily. Seeing the words helps you connect sounds and meanings. Later, listening alone also helps you get used to fast English.

Q1. What is the passage mainly about?
Q2. How long was the study?
Researchers in Taiwan tested this for 13 weeks.
Q3. In this passage, "get used to" means to ...
get used to ~ は「~に慣れる」。 used to do(以前は~した)との区別は入試頻出。正解は A。
Many English learners often say, 'The recording is too fast!' In 2011, Renandya and Farrell suggested extensive listening, which means listening to a lot of easy English at your own level. In 2014, Chang and Millett divided learners in Taiwan into three groups.
Over 13 weeks, each group studied ten easy graded readers by reading only, listening only, or reading while listening. On a test with English at the same speed, the reading-while-listening group made the most consistent progress. In a longer study, the listening-only group became better at understanding fast English, while the reading-only group did not improve much in listening.

Q1. What is extensive listening?
extensive listening, which means listening to a lot of easy English at your own level とあるので C。
Q2. Which group did not improve much in listening in the longer study?
the reading-only group did not improve much in listening とあるので A。
Q3. What lesson can we draw from the passage?
Intermediate learners often complain that recordings are simply too fast. In 2011, Renandya and Farrell argued that teaching strategies such as predicting is not enough. Learners also need extensive listening, meaning large amounts of easy, comprehensible input at their own level. Classroom evidence from Taiwan backs them up.
In Chang and Millett's 2014 study, three groups worked through ten level-one graded readers over 13 weeks, by reading only, listening only, or reading while listening. On a post-test in which passages were heard once at the same speed, the reading-while-listening group improved most consistently, probably because the printed text helped them link unfamiliar sounds to words they already knew.
A follow-up spanning three terms and 28 audio-supported books found that the listening-only group came to understand harder texts at faster speeds, whereas the reading-only group fell behind in listening. Both Taiwanese studies used existing classes instead of random assignment, and some tests resembled the practice materials, so the benefits may be overestimated. Strategy training has its place too. In a study of 106 learners of French, a semester of practice in planning, monitoring and evaluating their listening improved comprehension, and weaker listeners gained the most.
