Many students learn words with flashcards. They often use small sets of cards and repeat them many times. But this may not be the best way. In a study in the US, students did better with one big set of cards.
With a big set, there is more time before you see the same card again. Most students thought small sets were better, but they were wrong. Review words when you are starting to forget them.

Q1. What is the passage mainly about?
Q2. Which way worked better in the study?
students did better with one big set of cards とあるので A。
Q3. What did most students think?
Most students thought small sets were better, but they were wrong.
Researchers have known about the spacing effect for over a century. If you review with gaps between sessions, you remember longer than if you cram. In 2009, a US psychologist tested this with online flashcards.
Students learned difficult words either in one large deck or four small ones. Cards in the large deck took longer to come back, and across experiments, spacing worked better for 90% of the students. But after the first session, 72% felt cramming had worked better.
So what is the best gap? In a 2008 study of more than 1,350 people, the ideal interval depended on the test date. For a test one week later, a gap of about one to three days was best. For a test one year later, longer gaps worked better.

Q1. What is the "spacing effect"?
If you review with gaps between sessions, you remember longer than if you cram.
Q2. For a test one week later, what gap was best?
For a test one week later, a gap of about one to three days was best とあるので B。
Q3. What does the 72% result suggest?
In a 2009 flashcard experiment, Kornell had students learn difficult words either in one large deck or in four small ones. The large deck naturally lengthens the gap before each card reappears, and across experiments, spacing beat massing for 90% of participants. After the first session, though, 72% believed that cramming had been more effective. That blind spot matters, because the spacing effect is one of the most robust results in memory research.
Distributed practice produces better long-term retention than massed practice, and a 2006 review of hundreds of experiments confirmed it consistently. The best gap is not simply the longest one. Cepeda and colleagues tested more than 1,350 people with gaps of up to 3.5 months and retention tests up to a year later. The ideal interval grew with how long the material had to be remembered.
For a test one week away, the best gap was roughly 20 to 40 percent of that week, but for a test a year away it was only 5 to 10 percent of the year. Gaps that were too long reduced the benefit. Steadily expanding gaps add little. A 2022 meta-analysis of 48 second-language experiments found equal and expanding intervals roughly equivalent.
