Many parents read picture books to their children. But how should they read? Research says it is good to ask questions, like "What is this?", and let the child talk. This is called dialogic reading. In one big study, children learned more words when parents read this way.
But newer studies found that the effect is smaller than people thought. It may also become weaker after some time. So reading together is good, but it is not magic.

Reading picture books aloud is a popular way to support young children's language. Researchers have found that the way adults read matters. In dialogic reading, adults ask questions, praise the child's answers and add a few new words, so the child becomes a speaker, not just a listener. A 2008 meta-analysis of 16 studies showed a moderate effect on the words children could say.
A later review of 19 randomized trials with about 2,600 children aged one to six also found benefits, though they were smaller. But when shared reading was compared with other activities, the effect almost disappeared. For children learning English as a foreign language, the gains seemed to fade after the program ended.

Shared book reading is often promoted as one of the best things parents can do for a child's language development, and many families extend this advice to English picture books. Research suggests, however, that how books are read matters as much as whether they are read. In dialogic reading, developed in the United States in the late 1980s, adults prompt the child with questions, evaluate and expand the child's answers, and encourage repetition.
A 2008 meta-analysis found a moderate advantage for this style over ordinary reading on expressive vocabulary, although the benefit was much smaller for four- and five-year-olds. Later syntheses have been more cautious. A 2020 analysis of 19 randomized controlled trials reported small effects on expressive and receptive language, with little impact when the dose was low.
A 2019 meta-analysis found that the overall effect shrank to almost zero when shared reading was compared with an active control group rather than with no treatment. For children learning English as a second or foreign language, short-term gains were clear, but long-term effects were small and not statistically significant. Dialogic reading is therefore best viewed as a valuable everyday habit, not a shortcut to fluency.
