Many people say children learn languages faster than adults. But is that true? In a study in the Netherlands, English speakers of different ages moved there and learned Dutch. In the first few months, teenagers and adults learned the fastest.
Children aged three to five had the lowest scores on every test. But over many years, people who start young often reach a higher, native-like level. Adults are good at starting fast.

子どもは大人より速く言語を覚えると多くの人が言います。でも、それは本当でしょうか。オランダでのある研究で、さまざまな年齢の英語話者がそこへ引っ越し、オランダ語を学びました。最初の数か月で最も速く学んだのは、10代と大人でした。
3〜5歳の子どもは、どのテストでも最も低い点数でした。しかし長い年月で見ると、幼いころに始めた人は、より高い、ネイティブのようなレベルに届くことが多いのです。大人は速くスタートするのが得意なのです。

Q1. Who learned the fastest in the first few months?
In the first few months, teenagers and adults learned the fastest. とあるので C。
Q2. What is the strength of people who start young?
over many years, people who start young often reach a higher, native-like level とあるので A。
Q3. In this passage, "native-like" means ...
native-like は「ネイティブ(母語話者)のような」なので D。
In a 1978 study, English speakers who had moved to the Netherlands were tested three times over a year. Adults and 12- to 15-year-olds improved fastest in the first months, while three- to five-year-olds scored lowest on every test.
So are adults better language learners than children? Not exactly. Researchers say we should separate the speed of learning from the final level reached. A 1979 review found that adults and older children progress faster at first.
But people who start as children in a natural setting usually reach a higher final level. A Swedish study looked at 195 people who considered themselves native-like. Most of those who started before age 12 were judged as native speakers. Very few of the later starters were.

Q1. What should we separate, according to researchers?
we should separate the speed of learning from the final level reached とあるので B。
Q2. In the Swedish study, who was usually judged as native speakers?
Most of those who started before age 12 were judged as native speakers. とあるので A。
Q3. What can we infer from the passage?
大人は最初が速く、子どものうちに始めた人は最終到達度が高い、というのが全体の内容なので C。
In 1978, Snow and Hoefnagel-Höhle tested English speakers of various ages three times during their first year in the Netherlands. Adults and 12- to 15-year-olds made the fastest progress at first, and three- to five-year-olds scored lowest on every measure. The study was small, but it undercuts the popular image of young children soaking up languages without effort. That image blurs a distinction between rate of learning and ultimate attainment.
Reviewing the evidence in 1979, Krashen, Long and Scarcella concluded that adults outpace children at first and older children outpace younger ones, but that people who begin as children in natural settings generally reach higher final levels. Later research supports the second half of that pattern. A 2009 study looked at 195 Spanish speakers who regarded themselves as native-like in Swedish.
Most who had started before age 12 passed as native speakers to listeners. Under detailed linguistic testing, though, none of the later starters fell within the native range, so the definition of "native-like" matters a great deal. An analysis of about two-thirds of a million online grammar tests suggested that native-like grammar may require starting by about age ten. Grammar-learning ability itself, however, stays high until the late teens.
