Some families use a rule called "one parent, one language." For example, the father speaks Japanese and the mother speaks English to the child. Many people think this rule makes children bilingual.
But a study of 1,899 families found that the rule did not decide success. Other studies showed that the amount of each language was more important. Children need to hear and use a language a lot to speak it well.

Q1. What is the passage mainly about?
Q2. How many families were in the study?
a study of 1,899 families とあるので C。
Q3. What does "amount" mean in this passage?
amount は「量」。the amount of each language は「それぞれの言語の量」なので A。
"One parent, one language," often called OPOL, is a popular strategy for raising bilingual children. Each parent speaks only one language to the child, so the child can keep the two languages separate. However, research suggests that the rule itself is not the key. In a survey of 1,899 families in Belgium, all the children spoke the majority language of their community, but many did not speak their family's minority language.
OPOL was neither necessary nor sufficient for success. A Dutch study found that differences between family language patterns disappeared once the amount of input was taken into account. In Canada, parents' actual language use explained far more of children's exposure than the family's stated strategy. So quantity matters more than rules.

Q1. What did the survey in Belgium find?
all the children spoke the majority language ... but many did not speak their family's minority language とあるので B。
Q2. What happened in the Dutch study when the amount of input was considered?
differences between family language patterns disappeared once the amount of input was taken into account とあるので A。
Q3. What would the writer most likely advise a family raising a child in English and Japanese in Japan?
Many parents who want to raise bilingual children adopt the "one parent, one language" (OPOL) strategy, in which each parent consistently uses a different language with the child. The idea is intuitive, yet the evidence suggests it is not the decisive factor. In a large questionnaire study of 1,899 families in Flanders, Belgium, every child spoke the majority language, but use of the minority language varied widely.
Children were most likely to speak it when both parents used the minority language at home and no more than one parent also used the majority language. OPOL, by contrast, was neither a necessary nor a sufficient condition. In a Dutch study of 136 families, apparent effects of family language patterns vanished once input properties such as quantity were controlled.
A Canadian study of infants found that what each parent actually spoke explained about half of the variation in children's exposure, whereas the family's declared strategy explained only around six percent. These findings come mainly from families with native-speaker parents, so they may not fully apply to Japanese parents speaking English as a second language. Even so, the amount of input matters more than the rule.
