Many students read their textbooks again and again before a test. But is this the best way? In a 2006 study, one group studied a text four times.
Another group studied it once and then tried to remember it three times. Five minutes later, the studying group did better. But one week later, the remembering group did much better. So close your book and test yourself. Trying to remember makes memory stronger.

Q1. What is the passage mainly about?
Q2. Which group did better one week later?
one week later, the remembering group did much better とあるので A。
Q3. In this passage, "test yourself" means ...
close your book and test yourself
Rereading a textbook feels productive, but it may be one of the least effective ways to study. In 2006, Roediger and Karpicke compared students who studied a short passage four times with students who studied it once and then wrote down what they could recall three times. On a test five minutes later, the rereading group did better.
One week later, however, the recall group remembered much more, about 60 percent compared with 40 percent. This is called the testing effect, or retrieval practice. Rereading creates a feeling of familiarity, but that is different from being able to answer without looking. Students who reread were also more confident, even though they remembered less.

Q1. What did the second group do in the 2006 study?
studied it once and then wrote down what they could recall three times とあるので B。
Q2. How much did the recall group remember one week later?
about 60 percent compared with 40 percent とあるので C。
Q3. What does the last sentence suggest?
Most students prepare for exams by rereading their notes. Research on retrieval practice suggests this is far from the best use of their time. In a widely cited 2006 experiment, Roediger and Karpicke had students either study a short passage four times or study it once and then try three times to recall it in writing. On a test five minutes later, the rereaders came out ahead.
A week later the pattern had reversed. The retrieval group recalled roughly 60 percent of the content, while the rereaders recalled about 40 percent. The rereaders had also predicted that they would remember more. Repeated reading builds familiarity, and familiarity is easily mistaken for real knowledge. A 2014 meta-analysis confirmed a moderate overall advantage for testing over restudying, which grew when feedback was given and when the final test was delayed.
A 2021 review of 50 classroom experiments found consistent benefits too. Over very short intervals rereading can look better, and the gains for applying knowledge to new problems tend to be smaller than for recalling facts. Even so, a student who closes the notebook and writes down what she remembers is using one of the best-supported study methods there is.
