People often say a dog's nose is 10,000 times better than a human nose. Dogs do have an amazing sense of smell. In one test, two dogs found a banana-like smell even when it was extremely weak.
But the number "how many times better" changes with the kind of smell. For some smells, people are more sensitive than dogs. Dogs also have a special space deep in the nose that collects smells.

Q1. What is the passage mainly about?
Q2. How many dogs were in the test?
In one test, two dogs found ...
Q3. In this passage, "sensitive" means ...
more sensitive than dogs
You may have heard that a dog's sense of smell is 10,000 or even 100 million times better than ours. Dogs have excellent noses. In a 2006 study, two pet dogs found a box with a banana-like smell at concentrations of about one part per trillion. However, only two dogs were tested, and different methods give very different results. A neuroscientist also pointed out in 2017 that humans are more sensitive than dogs to some smells.
So the answer depends on the smell. In 2010, researchers made a 3D model of a dog's nose and found that air is carried efficiently to a special area full of smell cells. Dogs also take in air separately through each nostril, which may help them find the direction of a smell.

Q1. What is the main idea of the passage?
So the answer depends on the smell.
Q2. What did the researchers use in the 2010 study?
In 2010, researchers made a 3D model of a dog's nose とあるので D。
Q3. Why may dogs be able to find the direction of a smell?
take in air separately through each nostril, which may help them find the direction of a smell とあるので B。
In a 2006 experiment, a Rottweiler and a standard schnauzer learned to pick out amyl acetate, a chemical that smells like bananas, from five boxes. Their detection thresholds reached 1.9 and 1.14 parts per trillion. Figures like these are impressive, and popular claims go much further, saying that dogs smell 10,000, a million or even 100 million times better than humans.
No single number of that kind holds up well. The 2006 study tested only two dogs, and earlier studies using other methods produced thresholds that differed by factors of tens to tens of thousands. A 2017 article in Science went further and called the idea of a weak human sense of smell a nineteenth-century myth. People, it pointed out, are more sensitive than dogs to certain substances.
Where dogs clearly stand apart is in the design of the nose. A 2010 study built 3D models from MRI scans and used them to simulate sniffing. Inhaled air was directed efficiently into a recess packed with olfactory cells. Air also flows separately through each nostril, and that may help a dog work out which direction an odor is coming from.
