When you study with a word book, do you look at the English word and say the Japanese meaning? Many students do.
But a 2009 study with Japanese learners found something important. Students who looked at the meaning and said the English word learned more about spelling and grammar. Students who went from English to Japanese were better at understanding words. So if you want to speak and write, practice from Japanese to English, too.

Q1. What is the passage mainly about?
英→日か日→英か、練習の向きで身につく力が変わるという内容なので D。
Q2. What did students who went from meaning to English learn more about?
Students who looked at the meaning and said the English word learned more about spelling and grammar とあるので B。
Q3. In this passage, "practice" means ...
practice は「上達するためにくり返し行う=練習する」なので C。
Most learners study vocabulary by looking at an English word and recalling its Japanese meaning. This is the receptive direction. In a 2009 study, Webb compared it with the productive direction, where Japanese learners of English saw the meaning and recalled the English word. He used ten different tests of word knowledge.
The productive group did better in many areas, including spelling and grammatical use. The receptive group was better at recognizing the meaning of English words. A study of Dutch university students learning English idioms found a similar pattern.
Learners did best on tests that matched the direction they had practiced. So if you want to use a word when you speak or write, practice going from Japanese to English.

Q1. What is the "productive direction" in this passage?
the productive direction, where Japanese learners of English saw the meaning and recalled the English word と定義されているので A。
Q2. What was the receptive group better at?
The receptive group was better at recognizing the meaning of English words. とあるので D。
Q3. What does the study of Dutch students suggest?
Learners did best on tests that matched the direction they had practiced. とあるので B。
Japanese learners typically drill vocabulary in one direction: they see an English word and supply its Japanese meaning. Research on learning direction suggests this habit builds only part of what learners need. Webb had Japanese learners of English study word pairs either receptively, from English to meaning, or productively, from meaning to English, and then measured ten aspects of word knowledge.
Productive learners outperformed receptive learners on a wide range of measures, including spelling and grammatical functions, whereas receptive learners were superior at recognizing meaning from form. Webb concluded that if only one approach can be used, productive learning may be more effective. Steinel and colleagues, studying Dutch university students learning English idioms, found that performance was best when the testing direction matched the learning direction, which fits the principle that practice transfers most strongly to similar tasks.
That said, these were short-term paired-associate experiments, so it is unclear how far the results extend to using words in real conversation or writing. Productive practice is also harder, and very low success rates early on could discourage learners. A sensible sequence is therefore to grasp meaning receptively first and then switch to productive recall, pausing to try before checking the answer.
