Should you learn English words with word cards or by reading? Some people say word cards are boring and useless. But research shows that word cards help you learn many words quickly.
When you look at a word and try to remember its meaning, your memory gets stronger. Reading helps too, but you need to meet a word many times. So use cards first, and then meet the words again in stories.

英単語は単語カードで覚えるべきでしょうか、それとも読むことで覚えるべきでしょうか。単語カードは退屈で役に立たないと言う人もいます。しかし研究によると、単語カードは多くの単語を素早く覚えるのに役立ちます。
単語を見てその意味を思い出そうとすると、記憶が強くなるのです。読むことも役立ちますが、1つの単語に何度も出会う必要があります。ですから、まずカードを使い、それから物語の中でその単語にもう一度出会いましょう。

Q1. What does research show about word cards?
word cards help you learn many words quickly とあるので B。
Q2. What makes your memory stronger, according to the passage?
When you look at a word and try to remember its meaning, your memory gets stronger. とあるので A。
Q3. What is the writer's advice?
use cards first, and then meet the words again in stories とあるので D。
English learners often argue about whether to memorize words with word lists and flashcards or to learn them from context while reading. Research suggests the answer is both. A 2020 meta-analysis by Webb and colleagues found that intentional learning activities such as flashcards help learners acquire many words in a short time. This is because flashcards make you practice retrieval, trying to recall a meaning from memory.
Learning from context, on the other hand, depends on how often you meet a word. In one study, words that appeared only a few times in a graded reader were largely forgotten three months later. However, meeting words in context helps you learn how they are used, including collocations such as "make a decision." Cards start the relationship; reading deepens it.

Q1. Why are flashcards effective, according to the passage?
flashcards make you practice retrieval, trying to recall a meaning from memory とあるので B。
Q2. What does learning from context depend on?
Learning from context ... depends on how often you meet a word. とあるので A。
Q3. What does "Cards start the relationship; reading deepens it" mean?
カードで単語との最初の出会いを作り、読書で使い方まで深く知る、という役割分担の比喩なので C。
The debate between learning vocabulary from word lists and learning it from context is long-standing, and recent meta-analyses suggest that the two approaches are complementary rather than competing. In 2020, Webb, Yanagisawa and Uchihara synthesized studies of intentional vocabulary activities and found that they lead to substantial gains in a short time, though the gains varied widely across activities and shrank on delayed tests.
Incidental learning from context is less efficient but not worthless. A 2019 meta-analysis found a moderate correlation, about .34, between the number of times a word is encountered and how well it is learned, and a classic study with a graded reader showed that words met only a few times were largely forgotten after three months.
A 2023 meta-analysis confirmed that reading, listening and viewing do produce vocabulary gains, though smaller ones than intentional study. There are two caveats. Studies of intentional learning often rely on immediate tests of meaning recall, which may overstate durable, usable knowledge. Context, meanwhile, offers what cards cannot: collocations, grammatical patterns and nuance. A promising route is to establish form and meaning with spaced retrieval practice, then reinforce and enrich words through extensive input.
