- 確認:「You mean the red one?(赤いほうってこと?)」
- 聞き返し:「Sorry, what?(え、何?)」
- 理解の確認:「Do you understand?(わかった?)」

When you do not understand someone in English, do you just nod? Michael Long, an American researcher, said that asking questions like 'Sorry, what?' helps you learn. In one experiment, learners heard instructions in English.
Some heard easier sentences. Others heard normal sentences but could ask questions. The second group understood more. Another study found that learners who joined the conversation learned more than learners who only watched.

Q1. What is the passage mainly about?
聞き返しなどの質問が学習を助ける、というロングの考えと実験の話なので C。
Q2. Which group understood the instructions better?
Others heard normal sentences but could ask questions. The second group understood more. とあるので D。
Q3. In this passage, "nod" means to ...
nod は「うなずく」。わからないのにうなずいてしまう、という場面なので A。
In 1983, the American applied linguist Michael Long compared conversations between native speakers with conversations between native speakers and learners. He found that native speakers did not just simplify their sentences. They also changed the conversation itself, using confirmation checks such as 'You mean the red one?' and clarification requests such as 'Sorry, what?'.
Long argued that this negotiation of meaning makes input understandable. In 1987, Pica and colleagues tested 16 learners. Those who could freely ask questions while listening to instructions understood more than those who heard simplified instructions. The repetition and rephrasing that happened during the conversation seemed to help them most.

4択リーディングクイズ
Q1. What did Long find about native speakers talking with learners?
They also changed the conversation itself, using confirmation checks ... and clarification requests とあるので B。
Q2. In the 1987 study, what seemed to help understanding most?
最終文 The repetition and rephrasing ... seemed to help them most とあるので A。B は簡単にした指示の条件で、こちらのほうが理解度は低かった。
Q3. What advice would Long most likely give to learners?
聞き返しなどの意味のやりとりがインプットを理解可能にする、というのがロングの主張なので D。A は逆の行動。
Many learners respond to a remark they do not understand by smiling and nodding, but Michael Long's interaction hypothesis suggests that this wastes a valuable opportunity. Comparing native-speaker conversations with those involving learners in 1983, Long found that native speakers did more than simplify their language: they modified the structure of the interaction through confirmation checks, clarification requests and comprehension checks. Such negotiation of meaning, he argued, turns input into comprehensible input. In 1987, Pica and colleagues found that 16 learners understood instructions better when they could freely ask questions than when they heard pre-simplified versions; the repetition and rephrasing generated by interaction, rather than simplification itself, appeared to aid comprehension.
Interaction may also promote grammatical development. In Mackey's 1999 study of 34 learners, those who actively took part in interactive tasks advanced in their ability to form English questions, whereas those who merely observed the same exchanges made little progress. However, group sizes in individual studies were small. A later meta-analysis reported that interactive tasks had positive effects on grammar and vocabulary that persisted on delayed tests, but the strength of the effect varies with the task, the target structure and the way learning is measured.
