たとえば「I want you to marry me」も文法的には正しいのに、プロポーズでは普通「Will you marry me?」と言います。
02決まり文句は「速く」処理できる
では、チャンクを知っていると何がいいのか。
ノッティンガム大学のコンクリンとシュミットは2008年、決まり文句と、そうでない語の並びの読み時間を比べました。その結果、
- 決まり文句(take the bull by the horns など)のほうが速く読まれた

When you speak English, do you build each sentence word by word? Researchers in Sweden found that about half of English is made of ready-made phrases, like 'in fact' and 'make sure'. These phrases are called chunks.
People can read chunks faster than other groups of words. This is true for learners, too. In one class, students who studied chunks were judged as better speakers.

英語を話すとき、1語ずつ文を組み立てていますか?スウェーデンの研究者たちは、英語の約半分が「in fact」や「make sure」のような、できあいのフレーズでできていることを発見しました。こうしたフレーズはチャンクと呼ばれます。
人はチャンクを、他の語の並びより速く読むことができます。これは学習者にも当てはまります。あるクラスでは、チャンクを学んだ学生のほうが、より上手な話し手だと評価されました。
4択リーディングクイズ
Q1. What is the passage mainly about?
英語の約半分ができあいのフレーズ(チャンク)でできており、それが役立つという話なので D。
Q2. About how much of English is made of ready-made phrases?
about half of English is made of ready-made phrases とあるので A。
Q3. In this passage, "ready-made" means ...
ready-made は「既製の、できあいの」。使う前にすでにできあがっている、という意味なので B。
In 2000, the Swedish linguists Erman and Warren analyzed spoken and written English. They found that, on average, about half of the language consisted of prefabricated phrases such as 'in fact', 'I'm afraid' and 'make sure'. In 2008, Conklin and Schmitt compared reading times and found that formulaic sequences were read faster than other word strings, not only by native speakers but also by learners.
In another study in Belgium, 32 university students took a 22-hour English course. In one class of 17 students, the teacher helped learners notice fixed phrases. In speaking interviews after the course, these students were judged to be more proficient.

ベルギーでの別の研究では、32人の大学生が22時間の英語の授業を受けました。17人のクラスでは、先生が学習者に決まった言い回しに気づかせる指導をしました。授業後のスピーキング面接で、この学生たちのほうが英語が上手だと評価されました。
4択リーディングクイズ
Q1. What did Conklin and Schmitt find?
not only by native speakers but also by learners とあるので C。not only A but also B の構文がポイント。
Q2. How many students were in the class that focused on fixed phrases?
In one class of 17 students とあるので A。32 は全体の人数、22 は授業時間。
Q3. Which piece of advice fits the passage best?
チャンクは速く処理でき、チャンクを意識した学生ほど上手と評価されたので、フレーズごと覚える D が合う。
Ask a native speaker to propose marriage and you will almost certainly hear 'Will you marry me?' Hardly anyone says 'I want you to marry me', even though it is perfectly grammatical. In the 1980s, Pawley and Syder argued that native speakers choose conventional expressions like this from countless grammatical alternatives, so much of what they say is not built word by word.
In 2000, Erman and Warren estimated that roughly half of both spoken and written English consists of prefabricated sequences. That figure is softer than it looks, because definitions of 'formulaic' vary and the share depends on how phrases are identified. The processing evidence is firmer. Conklin and Schmitt reported in 2008 that idioms were read faster than comparable non-formulaic strings, and this held for learners as well as native speakers.
Teaching chunks may pay off as well. In a small Belgian study of 32 English majors, 17 students had a teacher who drew attention to formulaic expressions. Examiners who did not know which class each student came from rated this group as more proficient, and the number of chunks a student used was related to the rating.

ネイティブスピーカーにプロポーズの言葉を言ってもらうと、ほぼ確実に「Will you marry me?」が返ってきます。「I want you to marry me」と言う人はまずいません。
Q1. Why does the author mention "Will you marry me?"
Hardly anyone says 'I want you to marry me', even though it is perfectly grammatical とあり、文法的に正しい選択肢の中から慣習的な表現を選ぶ例として挙げているので A。C は「文法的に誤り」ではないので誤り。
Q2. What was notable about the examiners in the Belgian study?
Examiners who did not know which class each student came from とあるので C。評価者が条件を知らないことで評価の偏りを防いでいる。
Q3. Why is the figure of "about half" softer than it looks?
definitions of 'formulaic' vary and the share depends on how phrases are identified とあるので B。C は「話し言葉・書き言葉の両方」と矛盾。
