When does your brain become an adult? In 2025, scientists in the UK studied brain scans of about 4,000 people aged 0 to 90. They found that the brain's wiring changes a lot at four ages: around 9, 32, 66, and 83. The biggest change came at about 32.
So, in a way, the brain stays in a teenage mode until the early thirties. This does not mean that 30-year-olds think like children.

Q1. What is the passage mainly about?
Q2. At what age was the biggest change?
The biggest change came at about 32.
Q3. In this passage, "wiring" means ...
Many people say that the brain is fully developed by around age 25, but a new study suggests otherwise. In 2025, researchers at the University of Cambridge analyzed special MRI scans from about 4,000 people aged 0 to 90. This type of scan follows how water moves in the brain, which shows the paths of nerve connections. The team found that brain wiring does not change in a straight line.
Instead, there are four turning points, at around 9, 32, 66, and 83, which divide life into five eras. From about 9 to 32, the wiring keeps becoming more efficient, so the researchers call this an "adolescent" period. The turning point at 32 was the strongest of all.

Q1. What common idea does the new study challenge?
Many people say that the brain is fully developed by around age 25, but a new study suggests otherwise とあるので D。
Q2. How many eras did the researchers find?
four turning points ... which divide life into five eras とあるので C。
Q3. Why do the researchers call the period from 9 to 32 "adolescent"?
the wiring keeps becoming more efficient, so the researchers call this an "adolescent" period とあり、行動ではなく配線の変化の向きを指しているので A。
Researchers at the University of Cambridge gathered diffusion MRI data from roughly 4,000 people aged 0 to 90. These scans trace the pathways of the brain's wiring by tracking how water molecules move. The team examined twelve measures of how the brain's network is organized and found four major turning points, at around ages 9, 32, 66 and 83.
Together they divide the lifespan into five eras. The study, published in Nature Communications in 2025, does not fit the popular claim that the brain reaches maturity at about 25. Between roughly 9 and 32, network efficiency rises steadily, a stretch the authors describe as "adolescent," and the shift at 32 was the sharpest. The researchers think these boundaries could help explain periods when the brain is especially vulnerable, such as those linked to learning difficulties or dementia.
The data came from several combined datasets, and differences in scanning conditions between them may have affected the results. The study was also cross-sectional, so it compared different people of different ages and never followed the same individuals over time. So the turning points are averages across a population, and they tell us nothing direct about how any one person's brain changes.
