Many people do not have time to go to the gym. But a study in the UK had good news. Scientists studied about 25,000 people who did not exercise. They wore a sensor on their wrist.
People who did three short bursts of hard activity a day, like running up stairs for one or two minutes, had a 38 to 40 percent lower risk of death. But fitter people may simply move more.

Q1. What is the passage mainly about?
Q2. How many times a day did these people do short, hard activity?
People who did three short bursts of hard activity a day とあるので C。
Q3. In this passage, "bursts" means ...
Many adults say they are too busy to exercise. A 2022 study offers some hope. Researchers in Australia analyzed data from about 25,000 people in the UK who said they did no sports or exercise. Each person wore a wrist sensor for a week, and their health was followed for about seven years.
Those who did three short bursts of vigorous activity a day, such as climbing stairs quickly for one or two minutes, had a 38 to 40 percent lower risk of death than those who did none. That adds up to only four or five minutes a day. However, because this was an observational study, fitter people may simply have been more able to move vigorously.

Q1. What is the passage mainly about?
Q2. How long was the participants' health followed?
their health was followed for about seven years とあるので C。
Q3. What is a possible reason the results should be read with care?
最終文 fitter people may simply have been more able to move vigorously と観察研究の限界を述べているので A。
About 25,000 people in the UK Biobank, with an average age of around 62, reported doing no sports or leisure exercise. In a 2022 study in Nature Medicine, Stamatakis and colleagues looked at how they moved anyway. Each person wore a wrist accelerometer for a week, and a computer model picked out short, vigorous bursts in daily life, such as hurrying up stairs or carrying heavy shopping at a fast pace. The researchers called them VILPA.
Over roughly seven years, people who did three bouts a day, each lasting one to two minutes, had a 38 to 40 percent lower risk of death than those who did none. Their risk of cardiovascular death was about 48 to 49 percent lower. Those are big numbers for four or five minutes a day. They are also relative figures, and a large relative drop can correspond to a modest absolute difference.
The harder question is cause. This was an observational study, and fitness itself may explain why some people move vigorously. A 2026 US study found that the association weakened and was no longer statistically clear once people with existing heart disease or cancer were left out, so reverse causation may play a part.
