Many books said that our bodies have ten times more bacteria than human cells. But in 2016, scientists in Israel did the math again. They used a model of a normal man who weighs 70 kg. They found about 38 trillion bacteria and about 30 trillion human cells.
So the two numbers are almost the same! Most bacteria live in the colon, a part of the large intestine. Also, more than 80 percent of our cells are red blood cells.

Q1. What is the passage mainly about?
Q2. How many human cells are in the body, according to the new count?
about 30 trillion human cells とあるので C。
Q3. In this passage, "almost the same" means ...
For decades, textbooks and speakers repeated a surprising claim: bacteria in the human body outnumber our own cells by ten to one. However, this figure came from a rough estimate made in the 1970s, and almost nobody checked it again. In 2016, researchers at the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel recalculated the numbers using newer data.
Their model was a typical man aged 20 to 30 who weighs 70 kilograms. They estimated about 38 trillion bacteria and 30 trillion human cells, a ratio of about 1.3 to 1. Most of the bacteria live in the colon, while the stomach and small intestine contain far fewer. The study also found that over 80 percent of human cells are red blood cells.

Q1. What is the passage mainly about?
Q2. Where do most of the body's bacteria live?
Most of the bacteria live in the colon とあるので D。胃や小腸は far fewer(ずっと少ない)。
Q3. What can we infer about the "ten to one" claim?
a rough estimate made in the 1970s, and almost nobody checked it again
For decades, textbooks and popular science books repeated a neat ratio of ten bacterial cells for every human cell in the body. The figure came from a rough estimate made in the 1970s. That estimate partly applied the high bacterial density of the colon to the whole digestive tract, and later writers kept citing it without checking.
In 2016, Sender, Fuchs and Milo went back to the question with updated data on organ volumes, bacterial densities and cell sizes. For a reference man aged 20 to 30 and weighing 70 kilograms, they estimated roughly 38 trillion bacteria and 30 trillion human cells, a ratio of about 1.3 to 1. These numbers are calculations, not direct counts, and they differ from person to person.
More than 80 percent of the human cells were red blood cells, which are numerous but tiny. All the bacteria together weighed only about 0.2 kilograms. A roughly equal count does not make our microbes any less important for health. But the two sides are so close that, as the authors noted, a single bowel movement could shift the balance.

Q1. According to the passage, why did the old estimate overstate the number of bacteria?
partly applied the high bacterial density of the colon to the whole digestive tract
Q2. Which of the following is true according to the passage?
More than 80 percent of the human cells were red blood cells とあるので C。
Q3. What does the author say about the 2016 figures?
These numbers are calculations, not direct counts, and they differ from person to person とあるので A。C は A roughly equal count does not make our microbes any less important for health
