hangry(ハングリー)——hungry(空腹)とangry(怒った)を合わせた造語で、今では英語の辞書にも載っています。

The English word "hangry" combines "hungry" and "angry." But does hunger really affect our mood in daily life? In 2022, researchers asked 64 adults in central Europe to report their hunger and feelings on a smartphone app five times a day for 21 days. They collected more than 9,000 responses.
The results showed that when people felt hungrier, they also felt more anger and irritability and less pleasure. This link remained even after the researchers considered age, sex and other factors. However, hunger does not always lead to anger. Another study found that people who noticed that their bad mood came from hunger were less likely to become hangry.

英単語の「hangry」は、「hungry(空腹の)」と「angry(怒った)」を組み合わせたものです。

The word "hangry," a blend of "hungry" and "angry," has made its way into English dictionaries. But does the feeling actually show up in everyday life? In 2022, researchers from Anglia Ruskin University and Austria used a method called experience sampling. Sixty-four adults in central Europe rated their hunger, anger, irritability and pleasure on a smartphone app five times a day for 21 days, producing 9,142 responses.
Greater hunger went along with more anger and irritability and less pleasure, even after the researchers adjusted for sex, age, body size, eating habits and each person's general tendency toward anger. Because the data came from real life rather than a laboratory, the findings say something about ordinary days. The study had limits, though. With only 64 people and self-reported feelings, it could show a link but not that hunger causes anger.
A 2019 study from the University of North Carolina points to when the effect is most likely. Hunger intensified negative feelings mainly in unpleasant situations. On this view, hangriness may arise when we misread the discomfort of an empty stomach as anger at someone else. And people who paid attention to their own bodily state were less prone to it.

Hunger intensified negative feelings mainly in unpleasant situations
