Do you listen to music while you study? In one study, students read texts and answered questions. They did best in a quiet room or with music without words.
Songs with lyrics made their scores lower, even when they liked the songs. Our brain listens to words even when we do not want to. But for simple tasks, like doing math drills, music may be fine.

Q1. What is the passage mainly about?
Q2. When did the students do best?
They did best in a quiet room or with music without words.
Q3. In this passage, "lyrics" are ...
Many students study with their favorite songs playing, but research suggests this can be a mistake for some tasks. In 2014, Perham and Currie asked university students to read passages and answer questions in four conditions: silence, music without lyrics, music with lyrics that they liked, and music with lyrics that they disliked. Students performed better in silence or with instrumental music.
Songs with lyrics lowered scores whether the students liked them or not. This is linked to the irrelevant sound effect: our brains automatically process speech we hear, so the words compete with the words we are reading. A review in 2011 found that music had little overall effect but tended to harm reading and memory tasks.

Q1. How many conditions were used in the 2014 study?
four conditions: silence, music without lyrics, ...
Q2. According to the passage, why do lyrics interfere with reading?
our brains automatically process speech we hear, so the words compete with the words we are reading とあるので D。
Q3. Which activity would probably be affected least by music?
Plenty of students do their homework with earbuds in, and a 2014 experiment by Perham and Currie suggests that what plays through them matters. University students took reading comprehension tests under four conditions: silence, instrumental music, songs with lyrics they liked, and songs with lyrics they disliked. Scores were highest in silence and with instrumental music.
Lyrical music lowered comprehension, and it made no difference whether participants enjoyed the songs. This fits the irrelevant sound effect, demonstrated in work such as Salamé and Baddeley's 1982 study, in which even meaningless spoken sounds disrupted people's memory for sequences of digits. The brain processes speech automatically, so sung words seem to compete with the words a learner is reading or trying to remember.
Background music is not always a problem, though. A 2011 meta-analysis found almost no overall effect. The small negative effects showed up mainly in reading and memory tasks, and music sometimes lifted people's mood. The 2014 study also had few participants, and other research indicates that sounds which change rapidly can distract even without lyrics. Favorite songs may be best saved for breaks, or for simple tasks that involve no words.
