Some teachers say, "Don't go back when you read," and "Don't read aloud in your head." But research does not agree. When we read, our eyes sometimes move back to earlier words.
In a 2014 study, words were hidden after the eyes passed them, so readers could not look back. Their understanding went down. Other studies show that we hear an inner voice even when we read silently. Both habits help us understand.

Q1. What is the passage mainly about?
読み返しや内なる声は理解を助ける、という内容が中心なので D。
Q2. What happened when readers could not look back?
Their understanding went down. とあるので A。
Q3. In this passage, "silently" means ...
read silently は「声を出さずに読む(黙読する)」なので B。
Exam advice often tells students not to reread and not to use an inner voice, because both seem to slow reading down. However, research on how people read suggests otherwise. Our eyes regularly jump back to earlier words, which researchers call regressions. In a 2014 experiment, Schotter and her colleagues replaced each word with x's as soon as the reader's eyes moved past it, making rereading impossible.
Comprehension dropped, not only for confusing sentences but also for normal ones. Brain imaging has also shown that areas responding to voices become active during silent reading, especially when the text contains direct speech. Rather than trying to remove these habits, learners who want to read faster should build vocabulary and grammar so that they need to reread less.

Q1. How did Schotter and her colleagues make rereading impossible?
replaced each word with x's as soon as the reader's eyes moved past it とあるので B。
Q2. When did comprehension drop in the 2014 experiment?
not only for confusing sentences but also for normal ones とあるので C。
Q3. What does the writer suggest for learners who want to read faster?
最終文 build vocabulary and grammar so that they need to reread less とあるので A。
Two familiar pieces of exam advice, "never read backward" and "don't sound out words in your head," assume that efficient reading is strictly linear and silent. Research on eye movements and inner speech challenges both assumptions. Readers routinely make regressions, brief movements back to earlier words. To test whether these are wasteful, Schotter, Tran and Rayner used a trailing-mask technique in 2014: each word turned into a row of x's as soon as the eyes left it, so looking back revealed nothing.
Comprehension declined, and not only for ambiguous sentences but for ordinary ones, so regressions seem to help readers check and repair their understanding. Inner speech appears equally functional. Yao and colleagues found that silently reading direct quotations activated voice-selective regions of the auditory cortex more than reading indirect speech, and Alexander and Nygaard showed that readers who believed a text was written by a fast talker read it more quickly. A 2014 review links inner speech to cognitive performance and to self-monitoring.
However, these studies mainly involved native speakers. Natural regressions should also be kept apart from the Japanese exam habit of translating sentences backward into Japanese word order, which is a different issue.
