Some English texts are easy to read, and some are very hard. Why? One big reason is background knowledge. In a 1988 study in the US, junior high school students read a story about a baseball game.
Some were poor readers but knew a lot about baseball. They remembered the story as well as or better than good readers who did not know baseball. So learn about common topics. It will help your reading.

Q1. What is the passage mainly about?
Q2. Which students remembered the baseball story well?
poor readers but knew a lot about baseball. They remembered the story as well as or better than good readers とあるので D。
Q3. In this passage, "background knowledge" means ...
Why do some English passages feel easy while others feel impossible, even when the vocabulary is similar? Research suggests that background knowledge plays a major role. In 1988, Recht and Leslie divided 64 American junior high school students into four groups based on reading ability and baseball knowledge. All of them read a passage describing half an inning of a baseball game.
Knowledge of baseball affected every measure, and poor readers who knew baseball remembered as much as or more than good readers who did not. A famous 1972 study also showed that a simple passage about doing laundry was very hard to understand until readers were told the topic. In a second language, too, better understanding goes with learning new words, and topic familiarity affects whether learners notice them.

Q1. How were the 64 students divided in the 1988 study?
based on reading ability and baseball knowledge とあるので C。
Q2. What did the 1972 study show?
was very hard to understand until readers were told the topic とあるので A。
Q3. What can we infer from the passage about reading in English?
background knowledge plays a major role
Reading comprehension is often treated as a general skill that transfers to any text, yet research on prior knowledge suggests that what readers already know can matter as much as how well they read. In 1988, Recht and Leslie grouped 64 American junior high school students by reading ability and baseball knowledge, then had them read an account of half an inning and reenact it with model players as well as retell it verbally. Prior knowledge had a strong effect on every measure, and poor readers with high baseball knowledge performed as well as or better than good readers with little knowledge.
Bransford and Johnson had earlier shown the role of schemas: a passage describing an everyday procedure was nearly incomprehensible until readers were told it was about washing clothes. In second language reading, Pulido found that higher comprehension was associated with learning and retaining new words, and that topic familiarity affected whether learners noticed them. These findings have limits. The baseball study involved only sixteen students per group, and in a second language the benefit of background knowledge may depend on proficiency. Even so, they suggest that building knowledge of frequent exam topics is a legitimate reading strategy.
