When you study new words, do you always practice in the same direction? A researcher in the US tested this. People learned pairs of Lithuanian and English words. Some people always practiced in one direction.
Others practiced in both directions. The people who practiced both ways remembered more, especially one day later. So try going from English to Japanese and from Japanese to English.

新しい単語を勉強するとき、いつも同じ向きで練習していますか。アメリカのある研究者がこれを調べました。参加者はリトアニア語と英語の単語のペアを覚えました。
いつも一方向で練習する人もいれば、両方向で練習する人もいました。両方向で練習した人の方が、特に1日後に、よく覚えていました。だから、英語から日本語へ、そして日本語から英語へ、の両方を試してみましょう。
4択リーディングクイズ
Q1. What is the passage mainly about?
単語を一方向で練習するか両方向で練習するかを比べた研究なので C が正解。
Q2. Who remembered more words?
The people who practiced both ways remembered more とあるので A。
Q3. In this passage, "both ways" means ...
both ways は「両方の向き」。直前の practiced in both directions を言い換えているので B。
Testing yourself is one of the best ways to remember new vocabulary. But does the direction of practice matter? A researcher at Montana State University asked people to learn pairs of Lithuanian and English words. They went through four rounds of study and testing.
Some participants always recalled the words in the same direction. Others recalled them in both directions. The people who practiced both ways remembered more. Their advantage was clearest on a test 24 hours later in the harder direction, from English to Lithuanian.
Before that final test, the learners also guessed their own scores. Their guesses did not show this benefit. So the learners may not have realized which method was helping them.

Q1. What question did the researcher want to answer?
does the direction of practice matter? が研究の問いなので D。
Q2. When was the advantage of practicing both ways clearest?
Their advantage was clearest on a test 24 hours later in the harder direction とあるので C。
Q3. What can we infer from the last three sentences?
予想に効果が表れておらず、the learners may not have realized which method was helping them とあるので A。
Testing yourself on new words instead of rereading them is among the most reliable ways to strengthen memory. In a study published in Behavioral Sciences, a researcher at Montana State University asked a narrower question. Does it also help to switch the direction of recall?
Participants learned Lithuanian-English word pairs over four study-test cycles. Some always recalled in one direction, either the easier one, from the Lithuanian word to its English meaning, or the harder one, from English to Lithuanian. Others recalled in both directions.
After practice, everyone predicted their final score and then took a test either ten minutes or 24 hours later. The mixed group retained more overall. Their edge was largest after a day's delay and in the harder direction. That pattern fits the idea of "desirable difficulties," conditions that slow learning down but make memories more durable.
The project was run by a single researcher with one language pair, and nobody was tested after more than 24 hours, so whether Japanese learners of English would see the same gain is an open question. The predictions were the odd part. Many participants rated the method as effective, yet their score predictions showed no sign of its benefit.

Q3. Which limitation does the author mention?
run by a single researcher with one language pair, and nobody was tested after more than 24 hours とあるので D。
