Can you imagine yourself speaking English well in the future? Zoltán Dörnyei said that this 'ideal self' helps people keep studying. A study of more than 32,000 learners found that people with a clear ideal self said they would try hard.
But the link with test scores was weak. So an image of the future is not enough. You also need a plan for today.

Q1. What is the passage mainly about?
Q2. How many learners were in the study?
A study of more than 32,000 learners とあるので B。
Q3. In this passage, "imagine" means to ...
The Hungarian applied linguist Zoltán Dörnyei believed that language learners are pushed forward by a picture of the person they want to become. He called this the ideal L2 self. His model adds the ought-to L2 self, shaped by what other people expect of you, and your current learning experience.
The gap between who you are now and your ideal self keeps you moving. In 2018, Al-Hoorie combined 32 reports covering 32,078 learners. The ideal L2 self was closely linked to intended effort, or how hard learners planned to work.
Its link with real achievement, such as test scores, was weak. Planning to try hard is not the same as improving. The ought-to self, built on other people's expectations, had almost no link with achievement at all.

the ought-to L2 self, shaped by what other people expect of you とあるので C。
Q2. Which relationship was the strongest?
The ideal L2 self was closely linked to intended effort とあり、テストの点数など実際の達成との結びつきは weak だったので A。
Q3. What does the result suggest?
Planning to try hard is not the same as improving とあるので D。
In Zoltán Dörnyei's L2 Motivational Self System, learners are driven by the gap between who they are now and an ideal L2 self, a vivid picture of themselves using the language well. The model also includes an ought-to L2 self, built on other people's expectations, and the learning experience. A 2009 study in Japan, China and Iran found that in all three, the stronger the ideal L2 self, the more willing learners were to make an effort.
Al-Hoorie's 2018 meta-analysis, the first on the theory, pooled 32 reports with 32,078 participants and confirmed a strong correlation between the ideal L2 self and intended effort. With objective achievement, though, the correlation was weak, and the ought-to self showed essentially no link at all. Method may be part of the explanation.
Most studies asked learners to report their own intentions on questionnaires, which can make correlations look stronger than they are. Programs in Britain and Hong Kong that helped Chinese students visualize their ideal L2 self raised motivation and confidence in English. But such intervention studies are few, and most were small. Dörnyei himself argued that a vision makes a difference only when it is specific, realistic and tied to an action plan.
