light/right、glass/grass、collect/correct……区別しないと困る単語のペアが大量にあります。v と b も very/berry、vote/boat、vest/best など多数。

Many Japanese learners practice the "th" sound first. But some pronunciation mistakes are more serious than others. If you mix up v and b, "very" becomes "berry." If you mix up l and r, "light" becomes "right." These pairs change the meaning of many words.
A 2019 study with Japanese learners found that these mistakes made speech harder to understand. Mistakes with "th" did not. So practice v and b first, and then l and r.

Q1. What is the main idea of the passage?
some pronunciation mistakes are more serious than others が主旨なので B。
Q2. What happens to "very" if you mix up v and b?
If you mix up v and b, "very" becomes "berry." とあるので D。
Q3. In this passage, "mix up" means ...
v と b を「混同する」と別の単語になる、という文脈なので A。mix up A and B「A と B を混同する」。
Japanese learners often spend hours on the "th" sound. Research suggests that time might be better spent elsewhere. The key idea is called "functional load." It means how many words would become confused if two sounds were not kept apart.
Pairs such as l and r or v and b separate many words, like "light" and "right" or "vote" and "boat." Fewer words depend only on the difference between "th" and s. In a 2019 study, English speakers judged how easy it was to understand 40 Japanese learners.
Only errors in high-load pairs, such as v becoming b, lowered the scores. The result was repeated with a second group of 40 learners. So if your practice time is short, work on pairs like v and b first.

Q1. What does "functional load" refer to in the passage?
It means how many words would become confused if two sounds were not kept apart. と説明されているので A。
Q2. What did the 2019 study find?
Only errors in high-load pairs, such as v becoming b, lowered the scores とあるので C。
Q3. Which of the following would the writer most likely recommend?
最終文で if your practice time is short, work on pairs like v and b first と述べているので B。
For many Japanese learners, "th" is the sound to conquer first. Research on functional load points to a different order. Functional load is the amount of work a sound contrast does in a language. The more word pairs a contrast keeps apart, the more confusion its loss causes. The l/r and v/b contrasts carry a heavy load, while "th" versus s carries relatively little.
In an exploratory Canadian study from 2006, Munro and Derwing found that high-load errors tended to lower listeners' comprehensibility ratings more than low-load errors did. Suzukida and Saito later tested the principle with 40 Japanese learners describing pictures. Only high-load consonant substitutions predicted lower comprehensibility, and the finding held up with a second group of 40. That does not make "th" irrelevant.
These studies measured how easy speech was to understand, not how native-like it sounded, and a "th" error may still make an accent more noticeable. Jenkins has argued that "th" matters little in international communication, but her case rests mainly on observation, with few experiments behind it. For a learner deciding where to spend the next hour of practice, v and b are the better bet.
