Can you speak English without knowing grammar words like 'relative pronoun'? Researchers say there are two kinds of grammar knowledge. One kind is knowledge you can explain. The other kind is knowledge you use quickly without thinking. When we talk, we mostly use the second kind.
But grammar rules are not useless. With a lot of practice, rules you can explain can become faster and more natural.

「関係代名詞」のような文法用語を知らなくても、英語は話せるのでしょうか。研究者たちによると、文法の知識には2つの種類があります。ひとつは説明できる知識です。もうひとつは、考えずにすばやく使える知識です。話すとき、私たちは主に2つ目の知識を使っています。
でも、文法のルールが役に立たないわけではありません。たくさん練習すれば、説明できるルールも、より速く自然に使えるようになるのです。
4択リーディングクイズ
Q1. What is the passage mainly about?
説明できる知識と、すばやく使える知識の2種類と、その関係が中心なので B。
Q2. Which kind of knowledge do we mostly use when we talk?
When we talk, we mostly use the second kind. とあり、2つ目は knowledge you use quickly without thinking なので C。
Q3. In this passage, "useless" means ...
use+-less(~がない)で「役に立たない」。not useless で「役に立たないわけではない」なので A。
Researchers distinguish two kinds of grammar knowledge. Explicit knowledge is knowledge you can consciously explain, such as grammar terms and rules. Implicit knowledge is knowledge you use quickly without thinking, as native speakers do. In 2005, Rod Ellis gave learners five types of tests on 17 grammar points.
The results divided clearly into two groups, one of tests that required quick answers and one of tests that allowed time to think. A British study of 509 university students of French found that knowledge of grammar terms and rules was only weakly related to their French ability. However, a 2017 study suggested that explicit knowledge, once automatized through practice, can help build implicit knowledge.

Q1. What is implicit knowledge?
Implicit knowledge is knowledge you use quickly without thinking とあるので D。A〜C は明示的知識の説明。
Q2. What did the British study of 509 students find?
was only weakly related to their French ability とあるので A。
Q3. What is the best advice based on the passage?
用語の知識だけでは語学力との関係は弱いが、練習で自動化された明示的知識は暗示的知識の助けになるので B。
Can you speak a language well without being able to name its grammar? Second language researchers frame this as a contrast between explicit knowledge, which learners can consciously state, and implicit knowledge, which they use rapidly and intuitively. In a 2005 psychometric study, Rod Ellis tested learners on 17 grammatical structures with five different measures. In a factor analysis, time-pressured tasks, such as oral imitation and timed grammaticality judgments, clustered together, while untimed judgments and rule explanation formed a separate factor.
So the two kinds of knowledge can apparently be measured apart. Can one turn into the other? In 2017, Suzuki and DeKeyser studied 100 advanced learners of Japanese and found that explicit knowledge that had become automatized predicted implicit knowledge. Their data came from a single point in time, though, so they show a link but not cause.
Whether explicit knowledge helps proficiency at all depends partly on how it is defined. Among 509 first-year British university students of French, metalinguistic knowledge varied widely but was only weakly related to proficiency. A 2008 study of advanced learners of German, by contrast, found a strong relationship when knowledge included error correction, rule explanation, and language analysis.
