Many parents think children must start English very early. This is true for children who live in English every day. But in Japan, most children learn English only at school for a few hours a week.
Studies in Switzerland and Germany found that children who started later caught up with early starters. So the total time with English matters more than the starting age. Also, it is never too late to start.

Q1. What is the passage mainly about?
Q2. What did the studies in Switzerland and Germany find?
children who started later caught up with early starters とあるので D。
Q3. In this passage, "caught up with" means ...
catch up with ~ は「~に追いつく」。
It is widely believed that children should start learning English as early as possible. Starting early clearly helps children who are surrounded by a language every day, such as immigrant children. However, the situation is different when English is learned mainly in school classes. A Swiss study followed children who started English at about eight and others who started at about thirteen.
The later starters caught up in a short time, and in the long run there was little difference. In a large German study, children who started in first grade led at first, but those who started in third grade caught up and later did better in reading and listening. A Spanish researcher found that the amount of input predicted English ability better than starting age.

Q1. For which children does starting early clearly help?
Starting early clearly helps children who are surrounded by a language every day とあるので D。
Q2. What happened in the German study?
those who started in third grade caught up and later did better in reading and listening とあるので B。
Q3. What can we infer from the passage?
The belief that earlier is always better has driven many parents to enroll young children in English classes. For children immersed in a language, such as immigrants, an early start does tend to predict higher ultimate attainment. Instructed settings with minimal input, however, tell a different story.
In Switzerland, Pfenninger and Singleton followed students who began English at around eight and others who began at around thirteen; the later starters caught up quickly, and factors such as home environment and motivation proved more influential than starting age. A large longitudinal study in Germany found that students who began in first grade initially led, but those who began in third grade caught up and eventually outperformed them in reading and listening.
Reviewing years of data, Muñoz concluded that the amount of input was a better long-term predictor of proficiency than age of onset. This makes sense: a child living abroad may hear thousands of hours of English a year, while one or two lessons a week add up to only dozens. A study of Japanese university students found an early-start advantage in sound discrimination that might appear only after substantial cumulative exposure. Older starters, meanwhile, can read and grasp rules.
