Today, many people practice English by talking with AI apps. Does it help? A study that combined 17 research projects found a medium effect on language skills. Practice with a clear goal, like ordering food, worked well.
But there is a problem. In one class, students lost interest in a chatbot partner after the first task. With a human partner, their interest stayed. So mix AI and people.

今日、多くの人がAIアプリと話して英語を練習しています。それは役に立つのでしょうか。17の研究をまとめた調査では、語学力に中くらいの効果があることがわかりました。料理を注文するといった、はっきりした目的のある練習がうまくいきました。
しかし、問題があります。ある授業では、学生たちは最初の課題のあと、チャットボットの相手への興味を失いました。人間の相手だと、興味は保たれました。だから、AIと人を組み合わせましょう。

Computers have been used as conversation partners for language learners for decades, long before today's AI. In 2022, Bibauw and his colleagues analyzed 17 studies on dialogue systems and found a medium effect on language proficiency. Systems that had a clear goal, led the conversation, gave corrective feedback or included game elements worked especially well. They helped beginners and improved vocabulary, grammar and accuracy.
However, in a language class, students' interest in practicing with a chatbot dropped after the first task, while their interest in a human partner stayed the same. This is known as the novelty effect, and it is a real challenge for AI practice.

Talking chatbots are now easy to find, but researchers were studying conversation with computers as a way to learn languages long before generative AI arrived. Most of the evidence comes from those earlier systems, and it may not carry over neatly to today's tools.
In 2019, Bibauw and colleagues reviewed 343 publications describing 96 dialogue systems. Some offered multiple-choice replies. Others set goal-oriented tasks such as ordering in a restaurant, and some allowed free conversation. The team found positive evidence for motivation and proficiency. Their 2022 meta-analysis of 17 studies reported a medium-sized effect on proficiency.
The systems that worked well were goal-oriented or focused on form, led the dialogue themselves, corrected errors and included game elements. Gains showed up for beginners and in vocabulary, grammar and accuracy. Guided conversation also seemed to achieve more than unrestricted chat. Keeping learners interested is harder.
In a language course, Fryer and colleagues found that students lost interest in a chatbot partner after the first task, while their interest in a human partner held steady. That is the novelty effect. A 2022 review of 25 studies likewise praised accessibility and personalization but named technical limitations, novelty effects and cognitive load as problems.
