Stars, planets and people are all made of ordinary matter. But ordinary matter is only about 5 percent of the universe. About 27 percent is dark matter. We cannot see it, but it has gravity. It helps hold galaxies together.
The other 68 percent or so is dark energy. It makes the universe grow faster and faster. Scientists think these two things are there, but they still do not know what they really are.

Q1. What is the passage mainly about?
Q2. About how much of the universe is ordinary matter?
ordinary matter is only about 5 percent of the universe とあるので D。
Q3. In this passage, "hold galaxies together" means ...
According to observations by the European Planck space telescope, which studied the oldest light in the universe, ordinary matter makes up only about 5 percent of the universe. About 27 percent is dark matter and about 68 percent is dark energy. Dark matter does not give off or reflect light, but it has gravity.
In 1970, Vera Rubin and Kent Ford reported how fast the Andromeda Galaxy rotates, and later studies showed that stars in the outer parts of galaxies move as fast as those near the center. Without some invisible mass, they would fly away. Then, in 1998 and 1999, two teams studying distant supernovae found that the expansion of the universe is speeding up. The unknown cause is called dark energy.

Q1. What did later studies after Rubin and Ford's work show?
stars in the outer parts of galaxies move as fast as those near the center とあるので C。
Q2. What did the two teams find in 1998 and 1999?
found that the expansion of the universe is speeding up とあるので A。
Q3. Why do scientists believe dark matter exists?
Without some invisible mass, they would fly away.
Everything we can see, from stars and gas to planets and people, accounts for only about 5 percent of the universe. Based on precise measurements of the oldest light in the cosmos by the Planck space telescope, the remainder is estimated to be about 27 percent dark matter and 68 percent dark energy. Evidence for dark matter grew from the work of Vera Rubin and Kent Ford, who reported the rotation of the Andromeda Galaxy in 1970; later studies showed that stars on the outskirts of galaxies orbit as fast as those near the center, implying an invisible mass holding them in.
Dark energy emerged from an even more startling discovery: in 1998 and 1999, two teams observing distant supernovae concluded that cosmic expansion is accelerating, a finding later honored with a Nobel Prize. Neither component has been identified. Dark matter cannot simply be dark gas or dead stars, and the leading idea of an undiscovered particle remains unconfirmed. It should also be remembered that the familiar percentages assume a particular cosmological model, and unresolved puzzles such as the Hubble tension may eventually force scientists to rethink dark energy.
