Many teenagers go to bed late on school nights and sleep long on weekends. Scientists in the United States studied 1,371 teenagers. They wore a Fitbit for about three weeks.
On average, they slept about seven hours, but experts say teens need eight to ten hours. Teens with short, late, or uneven sleep often felt more worried or sad. Uneven sleep showed the strongest link.

Q1. What is the passage mainly about?
Q2. How long did the teenagers sleep on average?
On average, they slept about seven hours とあるので C。
Q3. In this passage, "uneven" sleep is sleep that ...
Researchers from Stanford University School of Medicine and SRI International studied the sleep of 1,371 American teenagers with an average age of 14.1. Instead of using questionnaires, the teens wore Fitbit devices for about three weeks. Their average sleep was only about seven hours, while experts recommend eight to ten hours for ages 13 to 18.
Short sleep, late sleep onset, and irregular sleep on school nights were all linked to more anxiety and sadness. The link with irregular sleep was especially clear in girls. Teens with more irregular sleep also tended to hide their emotions instead of expressing them. The study was published in npj Mental Health Research.

Adolescents are often told to sleep longer, but a study in npj Mental Health Research suggests that regularity may matter as well. Researchers from Stanford University School of Medicine, SRI International, and other institutions analyzed data from 1,371 participants in the ABCD Study, a large U.S. project, who were about 14 years old. Rather than relying on self-reports, the teens wore Fitbit devices for roughly three weeks.
Average sleep was only about seven hours, below the eight to ten hours recommended for 13- to 18-year-olds. Short sleep, later sleep onset, and greater night-to-night variability on school nights were each associated with more internalizing symptoms such as anxiety and sadness, with variability showing a relatively strong link, particularly in girls. More variable sleep was also related to expressive suppression, or hiding one's feelings, but not to cognitive reappraisal.
However, because the study was cross-sectional, it cannot determine whether irregular sleep worsens mood or poor mood disrupts sleep. The effect sizes were also small. Only teens with sufficient Fitbit data were included, reducing the original 6,793 participants and possibly introducing bias.
