Teenagers' feelings are often compared to a roller coaster. Is this true? In the Netherlands, 474 teenagers aged 13 to 18 wrote online diaries about their feelings for five years. Their happiness, anger and sadness changed a lot from day to day at first.
But these ups and downs became a little smaller every year. Anxiety was different. It grew again in the late teens. Mood swings do not last forever.

Teenagers' moods are often compared to a roller coaster. To find out whether this is true and how long it lasts, researchers in the Netherlands followed 474 teenagers aged 13 to 18. Three times a year, for five days each time, the teenagers recorded their happiness, anger, sadness and anxiety in an online diary. They did this for five years.
The researchers measured how much each feeling changed from one day to the next. Changes in happiness, anger and sadness gradually became smaller between ages 13 and 18. Girls showed larger changes in happiness and sadness, but both boys and girls calmed down at a similar pace. Anxiety, however, increased again in the late teens.

Q1. What did the researchers measure?
measured how much each feeling changed from one day to the next とあるので C。
Q2. Which statement about boys and girls is true?
both boys and girls calmed down at a similar pace とあるので A。
Q3. What can be inferred about early adolescence?
For five days, three times a year, 474 Dutch teenagers aged 13 to 18 rated their happiness, anger, sadness and anxiety in online diaries. The teenagers kept this up for five years, and Maciejewski and colleagues then calculated how much each mood changed from one day to the next. The psychologist Hall famously described adolescence as a period of "storm and stress," but how much do teenagers' moods really swing, and for how long?
Day-to-day swings in happiness, anger and sadness gradually shrank across adolescence. Girls' happiness and sadness varied more than boys', but both sexes settled down at a similar rate. Anxiety took a different path and rose again in late adolescence, perhaps because of worries about exams and future plans. About 90 percent of the participants came from families with medium to high socioeconomic status, so the findings may not apply to every teenager.
Earlier research that used random beeps to sample moods in the moment found a related pattern. Average mood became less positive in early adolescence and leveled off around tenth grade. Arnett has argued that not every teenager goes through storm and stress, only that such difficulties are more likely at this age than at others.
