Q1. What is the passage mainly about?
Q2. What could the people still do during the two weeks?
They could still make calls and send text messages.
Q3. In this passage, "block" means ...
In 2025, researchers in Canada and the United States asked 467 iPhone users to block mobile internet on their phones for two weeks. Calls and text messages still worked, and the participants could still go online on a computer.
Smartphones are often said to make it hard to concentrate, but few experiments had tested this directly. The participants were put into two groups at random. One group blocked the internet during the first two weeks, and the other group did it later.
Blocking improved sustained attention by about as much as ten years of age-related decline. It also reduced symptoms of depression and raised people's sense of well-being. One reason was the way people used their free time. They spent more time meeting others, exercising, and being outdoors.

Q1. What exactly was blocked in the experiment?
block mobile internet on their phones
Q2. How big was the improvement in sustained attention?
by about as much as ten years of age-related decline とあるので C。
Q3. What does the passage suggest about why people improved?
For two weeks, 467 iPhone users in the United States and Canada used an app to shut off mobile internet on their phones. They could still make calls, send text messages, and go online on a computer. The trial, led by researchers at the University of Alberta and Georgetown University and published in PNAS Nexus in 2025, put a common complaint to the test.
Smartphones are often blamed for poor concentration and worsening mental health, but causal evidence has been thin. Participants were randomly assigned to block their phones in either the first or the second two-week period. Blocking improved sustained attention, measured with an objective computer task, by an amount comparable to ten years of age-related decline. Depressive symptoms eased, well-being rose, and 91 percent of participants improved on at least one outcome.
Only about a quarter of participants mostly kept to the block. Mental health was self-reported, and because everyone knew they were offline, their expectations may have colored their answers. Nobody knows yet whether the gains last for several months. Part of the benefit came from how people spent the time they got back. They met people face to face, exercised, and spent more time in nature.
