Why do many butterflies have bright patterns? A new study from the United Kingdom has an answer. When a butterfly flaps its wings, the patterns move and change. This can trick the eyes of birds.
Birds may think the butterfly is slower or is going in a different direction. In a test, 100 people tried to catch flying butterflies on a screen. They often touched behind the butterflies.

Q1. What is the passage mainly about?
(This can trick the eyes of birds)という話なので C。
Q2. Where did people often touch on the screen?
They often touched behind the butterflies.
Q3. In this passage, "trick" means ...
Many European butterflies are not poisonous, so why are their wings so colorful? Researchers from the Universities of Exeter and Essex in the UK suggest that the patterns create a moving illusion. As a butterfly flaps, its wings bend, open, and close, so the stripes keep changing direction.
A computer model of a bird's motion vision showed that this can make the butterfly seem to move in a different direction or more slowly than it really does. In an experiment, 100 people tried to tap flying butterflies on a touch screen. For butterflies with strong illusions, their taps tended to land behind the insect. The study was published in Nature.

Bold stripes make a butterfly conspicuous to birds, and for species that are not toxic, that looks like a bad deal. A study in Nature by researchers at the Universities of Exeter and Essex offers an explanation called motion dazzle. Butterfly wings bend and fold as they flap, so the orientation of the stripes changes rapidly. Like a rotating barber's pole, the pattern sends false motion signals.
The team filmed real butterflies at about 1,000 frames per second and simulated the flight of 757 pattern types from 397 European species. They then estimated illusion strength with a model of how birds detect motion. High contrast, vertical stripes and single broad bands made the effect stronger. When 100 human participants tried to catch virtual butterflies, they tended to aim behind the ones with strong illusions.
The team also let 57,600 patterns evolve on a computer to maximize the speed illusion, and the results came to resemble real European butterflies. No wild bird was tested, though. Illusion strength came from a model, and the "predators" in the catching game were people. Bold wings may also do other jobs, such as sending warning signals or controlling temperature.
