Finding 10,000 yen on the street makes you happy. Losing 10,000 yen, on the other hand, probably feels much worse. The amount is the same, but losing hurts more. This is called loss aversion.
Many studies say a loss feels about twice as strong as a gain of the same size. But some scientists say the effect is weaker when the amount of money is small.

Q1. What is the passage mainly about?
Q2. According to many studies, how strong does a loss feel?
a loss feels about twice as strong as a gain とあるので B。
Q3. In this passage, "hurts" means ...
Would you accept a coin-flip bet in which you win 10,000 yen for heads and lose 10,000 yen for tails? Most people would say no, even though the chances are equal. Many only agree when the possible win is about twice the possible loss. Psychologists Daniel Kahneman and Amos Tversky explained this with prospect theory in 1979. They argued that people judge outcomes as gains or losses from a reference point, and that losses feel stronger.
Some researchers argue that this loss aversion is weaker when the amounts of money are small. A 1990 experiment showed a related effect with mugs. People who were given a university mug asked for more than twice as much to sell it as others were willing to pay.

Q1. Why do most people refuse the coin-flip bet?
Q2. What did the 1990 mug experiment show?
people who were given a university mug asked for more than twice as much to sell it as others were willing to pay とあるので A。
Q3. Which statement best reflects what some researchers argue?
Some researchers argue that this loss aversion is weaker when the amounts of money are small.
Finding 10,000 yen is pleasant, but losing the same amount usually feels far worse. This asymmetry, known as loss aversion, lies at the heart of prospect theory, proposed by Daniel Kahneman and Amos Tversky in 1979. The theory holds that people evaluate outcomes not in absolute terms but as gains or losses relative to a reference point, and that the curve for losses is steeper than the curve for gains.
In practice, many people reject a fair coin-flip bet unless the potential win is roughly double the potential loss. The strength of this bias is expressed as a coefficient. Tversky and Kahneman estimated it at about 2.25 in 1992, while a 2024 meta-analysis of 607 estimates from 150 papers placed the mean at 1.96 (95% interval: 1.8–2.1). A related phenomenon, the endowment effect, appeared in a 1990 experiment in which mug owners demanded more than twice what potential buyers would pay.
But the "twice as painful" rule is not universal. In 2018, David Gal and Derek Rucker argued that losses do not clearly outweigh gains overall, and measured values can shift with question format and order. Most researchers now conclude that loss aversion exists, but its magnitude depends on context.
