unhappy、rewrite、portable、transport……。

Un-happy, re-write, port-able. Many English words have parts. 'Un-' often means 'not', and 're-' means 'again'. If you know these parts, you can guess the meanings of new words.
A study of 30 research projects found that teaching word parts helps, but only a medium amount. And be careful. 'Understand' does not mean 'stand under'. Always check your guess in a dictionary.

un-happy、re-write、port-able。多くの英単語にはパーツがあります。「un-」はたいてい「~ない」を意味し、「re-」は「再び」を意味します。こうしたパーツを知っていれば、新しい単語の意味を推測できます。
30の研究をまとめた調査では、単語のパーツを教えることは役に立つものの、その効果は中くらいだとわかりました。そして注意してください。「understand」は「下に立つ」という意味ではありません。推測した意味は必ず辞書で確かめましょう。
4択リーディングクイズ
Q1. What is the passage mainly about?
単語をパーツで覚える方法と、その効果・注意点の話なので C。
Q2. What does "re-" mean?
're-' means 'again' とあるので A。rewrite は「書き直す」。
Q3. In this passage, "guess" means to ...
guess は「推測する」。確かではないが答えを考えること。だから辞書で確かめる必要がある。正解は D。
Many English words can be broken into parts, including prefixes such as un- and re-, suffixes such as -ness and -able, and roots. In 1993, Bauer and Nation described 'word families', such as happy, happiness, unhappy and happily, and ranked word parts into seven levels by how common and regular they are.
In 2013, a meta-analysis of 30 studies found that teaching word parts to children had a moderate effect on vocabulary, spelling and word reading, but no clear effect on reading comprehension. The effect was larger for younger children. However, word parts can be misleading. 'Understand' is not simply 'stand under'.

Q1. What is a "word family"?
'word families', such as happy, happiness, unhappy and happily と具体例が示されているので B。
Q2. What did the 2013 meta-analysis find?
a moderate effect on vocabulary, spelling and word reading, but no clear effect on reading comprehension とあるので D。C は「年齢が低いほど効果大」と矛盾。
Q3. What would the author most likely advise?
効果は中程度で、understand のように誤解を招く例もあるので、ヒントとして使い文脈で確かめる C が合う。
Once you know that un- means 'not' and -able means 'can be', a single root seems to unlock a whole family of words. Bauer and Nation formalized this idea in 1993. They grouped words such as happy, happiness and unhappy into word families and ranked affixes into seven levels by frequency and regularity. The research support is real but moderate.
A 2013 meta-analysis of 30 studies found that teaching morphology to school-age children had a moderate effect. It improved word-part knowledge, vocabulary, word reading and spelling, though not clearly reading comprehension or fluency, and younger children gained more. Most of those children were learning English as their first language, so the results may not carry over neatly to foreign-language classrooms.
For learners of English, Sasao and Webb built the Word Part Levels Test, which assesses the form, meaning and function of word parts and was developed with data from 417 Japanese university students. Word analysis also has traps. It is hard to work out 'understand' from 'under' plus 'stand', and 'ready' has nothing to do with the prefix re-.

Q1. What does "The research support is real but moderate" mean?
直後のメタ分析で had a moderate effect(中程度の効果)と示されているので A。
Q2. Which three aspects does the Word Part Levels Test assess?
which assesses the form, meaning and function of word parts とあるので C。
Q3. Why might the meta-analysis not carry over neatly to learners of English as a foreign language?
Most of those children were learning English as their first language とあるので B。対象の違いによる一般化の限界は、研究系長文の頻出ポイント。
