Teachers often say, "Guess the meaning of a new word first, then check your dictionary." Is this the best way? In a 2003 study in the Netherlands, students learned French words in two ways.
Some guessed, checked, and then memorized. Others saw the meaning first and memorized it. Both groups remembered about the same number of words.
But guessing took much more time. The most useful step was the final memorizing. So do not skip it.

Q1. What is the passage mainly about?
推測してから辞書で確認する方法が本当に効果的かどうかがテーマなので C。
Q2. What was the difference between the two groups?
記憶量はほぼ同じで、But guessing took much more time とあるので B。
Q3. In this passage, "skip" in "do not skip it" means ...
最後の暗記が最も役立つので「それを飛ばすな・省くな」という意味。正解は A。
Many teachers recommend guessing an unknown word from context before checking a dictionary, because thinking for yourself seems to strengthen memory. A 2003 study by Mondria tested this idea with Dutch students learning French.
One group guessed the meaning from context, checked it in a word list, and then memorized it. The other group was given the meaning from the start and memorized it right away. Both groups remembered about the same amount, but the guessing method took much more time.
The memorizing step had the biggest effect. Guessing alone is risky, however. In a 1996 study, advanced readers without glosses or a dictionary often ignored unknown words or guessed wrong meanings. The best approach is to guess briefly, check carefully and then memorize the word.

Q1. In Mondria's study, what did the second group do?
The other group was given the meaning from the start and memorized it right away. とあるので D。
Q2. Which step had the biggest effect on memory?
The memorizing step had the biggest effect. とあるので A。
Q3. What can we infer from the 1996 study?
注釈も辞書もない読み手は無視したり誤って推測したりした、とあるので、確認なしの推測は誤りにつながると推測できる。正解は C。
Teachers often say to guess an unknown word from context first and check it later, on the theory that effortful guessing deepens memory. Mondria put this to the test in 2003 with Dutch students learning French. In the meaning-inferred method, learners guessed a word's meaning from context, checked it against a list and memorized it. In the meaning-given method, they saw the translation and memorized it at once. Both groups remembered about the same number of words.
But inferring took considerably longer, so it was less efficient per minute. Analyzed stage by stage, memorizing contributed the most, while inferring and verifying had smaller, roughly equal effects. Guessing alone has risks. Hulstijn and colleagues found that advanced learners reading a story without marginal glosses or a dictionary often skipped unfamiliar words or guessed wrong meanings, whereas glosses and dictionary use let repeated encounters strengthen memory.
Laufer and Hulstijn's involvement load hypothesis, which links retention to need, search and evaluation, helps explain why active processing can matter. Researchers disagree about how to weigh those three components and how to account for the extra time they take. A guess from context is a good start, but the word still has to be memorized.
