(Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Perception and Performance, 2015)。

When your phone makes a sound, do you want to check it right away? Part of the reason is in your brain. Dopamine cells react strongly to rewards that we do not expect.
A notification is like a lottery. You do not know if it is a message from a friend or just an ad. In one study, even hearing a notification caused more mistakes.

Q1. What is the passage mainly about?
Q2. According to the passage, what do dopamine cells react strongly to?
Dopamine cells react strongly to rewards that we do not expect とあるので B。
Q3. In this passage, "lottery" is ...
Why is it so hard to ignore a phone notification? One reason may be dopamine. In experiments with monkeys, dopamine neurons fired strongly when a juice reward came unexpectedly, but they reacted less when the reward was predictable. In another monkey study, these neurons were most active when the chance of a reward was 50%.
Phone notifications work in a similar way, because we never know whether the next one will be exciting or boring. In a 2015 study, people doing a task made more mistakes after receiving a notification, even if they did not touch their phones. However, no study has directly shown that checking a phone releases huge amounts of dopamine.

Q1. What is the main idea of the passage?
Q2. When were the dopamine neurons most active in the second monkey study?
most active when the chance of a reward was 50% とあるので D。
Q3. What does the 2015 study suggest?
In Wolfram Schultz's landmark experiments, a monkey waits for juice while its dopamine neurons are recorded. When the juice arrives unexpectedly, the neurons fire strongly. Once the monkey learns that a cue predicts the juice, the burst shifts to the cue.
When the reward is smaller than expected, activity dips. These cells signal reward prediction errors, the gap between what was expected and what came, rather than pleasure itself. A 2003 study found that activity rose gradually while the monkeys waited, peaking when the reward had a 50 percent chance of coming. A phone notification has the same structure.
Until we look, we cannot tell whether it brings a friend's message or an advertisement. That is partly why the urge to grab a buzzing phone gets blamed on "dopamine addiction." The label goes too far. The dopamine findings come from monkey neurons, and researchers disagree about whether heavy phone use counts as an addiction.
And a preregistered 2022 study failed to replicate the popular claim that a phone's mere presence drains mental capacity. Interruptions do cost something. In 2015, people doing an attention task made more errors after a notification arrived, even when they never picked up their phones.
