Usually, we take a test after we study. But taking a test before you study can also help. In a 2009 study, students answered questions about a science text before they read it. Of course, they got most answers wrong.
But after reading, they did better on the final test than students who just read for longer. Trying to guess an answer prepares your brain for the right one. Just remember to check the answers later.

Q1. What is the passage mainly about?
Q2. How did the students do on the questions before reading?
they got most answers wrong とあるので A。
Q3. In this passage, "guess" means ...
Most students think tests should come after learning, but research on the pretesting effect shows that testing first can also help. In 2009, Richland and colleagues asked university students to answer questions about a science passage before reading it. Naturally, they could answer very few.
However, after reading, these students scored higher on the final test than students who simply spent more time reading, especially on the information that had been asked about. Researchers think the pretest works in two ways: it makes you notice the answers while reading, and guessing activates related knowledge. A 2021 study with 1,573 participants found that pretests helped as much as, or sometimes more than, tests taken after learning.

Q1. On which information was the pretesting effect especially strong?
especially on the information that had been asked about とあるので D。
Q2. Which of the following is given as a way the pretest works?
it makes you notice the answers while reading とあるので B。
Q3. What did the 2021 study suggest?
pretests helped as much as, or sometimes more than, tests taken after learning とあるので C。
Tests usually come after learning, as a way to check it. Research on the pretesting effect shows that they can also help before instruction begins. In a 2009 study, Richland and colleagues had university students attempt questions about a science passage they had not yet read. As expected, most of their answers were wrong.
After reading the passage, though, these students outperformed peers who had spent the same time on extra reading, especially on the questions that had appeared in the pretest. There are two main explanations. One is that pretest questions direct attention, so learners notice the relevant information when they come across it. In support of this, one study found that prequestions helped only when participants remembered them.
The other is that making a guess activates related knowledge, which gives the correct answer a framework to fit into. The effect has boundaries. Material that the pretest did not ask about gains little or nothing, many studies have used short texts, and comparisons across whole courses are rare. In 2021, five experiments with 1,573 participants found pretesting as effective as testing after learning, and sometimes more so, whether the questions were multiple-choice or short-answer.
