Many books say it takes 21 days to make a habit. But a study in London found something different. People did one new thing every day, like drinking water at lunch.
The middle number was 66 days before it became automatic. For some people it took 18 days, and for others 254 days. There was also good news. Missing one day did not stop the habit from forming.

Q1. What is the passage mainly about?
Q2. What was the middle number of days in the study?
The middle number was 66 days とあるので A。
Q3. In this passage, "missing one day" means ...
You may have heard that a habit forms in 21 days, but this number does not come from an experiment. In 2010, Lally and her team at University College London asked 96 volunteers to choose one new behavior, such as drinking water with lunch or running before dinner, and to do it in the same situation every day for 12 weeks.
Each day, participants rated how automatic the behavior felt. For the 39 people whose data fitted the researchers' model well, the median time to become automatic was 66 days, but it ranged from 18 to 254 days. Harder behaviors, like exercise, tended to take longer than easy ones. Encouragingly, skipping a single day did not seriously affect the process.

Q1. What did the participants do every day?
Each day, participants rated how automatic the behavior felt.
Q2. Which behavior probably took longer to become a habit?
Harder behaviors, like exercise, tended to take longer than easy ones とあるので D。
Q3. What is the most encouraging message for students?
skipping a single day did not seriously affect the process とあるので A。
The often-quoted 21 days for forming a habit seems to trace back to a 1960 self-help book. No experiment produced it. In 2010, Lally and colleagues at University College London set out to measure it. They asked 96 adults to take up a new eating, drinking or exercise behavior, perform it every day in the same context for 12 weeks, and rate each day how automatic it felt.
For the 39 participants whose data fitted the researchers' model well, the median time to reach near-maximum automaticity was 66 days. The range ran from 18 days to 254. Missing a single opportunity did not seriously disrupt the process. Fewer than half of the participants could be used for the estimate, though. The highest figures were extrapolated beyond the 12-week observation period, and automaticity was self-reported instead of measured objectively.
A 2024 review of 20 studies, including this one, reported medians of 59 to 66 days, but many of those studies carried a high risk of bias, and almost none looked at study habits. For a new study routine, 66 days is only a rough guide, and the real figure could be a few weeks or most of a year.
