Today, the North Star is Polaris. But the North Star changes over a very long time. Earth's axis moves slowly in a circle, like a spinning top. One circle takes about 26,000 years.
About 4,700 years ago, the North Star was a different star called Thuban. In about 12,000 years, the bright star Vega will be the North Star. The North Star is not always the same star!

Q1. What is the passage mainly about?
the North Star changes over a very long time とあり、昔・今・未来の北極星を紹介しているので A。
Q2. Which star was the North Star about 4,700 years ago?
About 4,700 years ago, the North Star was a different star called Thuban.
Q3. In this passage, "changes" means ...
For centuries, travelers have used the North Star, Polaris, to find north, because it barely moves in the night sky. But Polaris has not always been the North Star.
Earth's axis slowly wobbles like a spinning top, because the Moon and the Sun pull on the bulge around Earth's equator. This motion is called precession, and one full circle takes about 26,000 years. As a result, the star closest to the north celestial pole changes over time.
About 4,700 years ago, when early pyramids were built in Egypt, the North Star was Thuban. In about 12,000 years, it will be Vega. Polaris is not even a very bright star. It is special only because of where it sits in the sky.

Q1. What is the passage mainly about?
Q2. What causes Earth's axis to wobble?
because the Moon and the Sun pull on the bulge around Earth's equator とあるので A。
Q3. What can we infer about Polaris?
Polaris is not even a very bright star. It is special only because of where it sits in the sky.
Polaris has guided travelers for centuries because it sits less than one degree from the north celestial pole. Its job is only temporary. Earth's spin axis undergoes precession. The gravitational pull of the Moon and Sun on the planet's equatorial bulge makes the axis trace a slow circle, completing one cycle in about 26,000 years, so the pole star changes.
Around 4,700 years ago, when Egypt's early pyramids were being built, Thuban in the constellation Draco held the position. In roughly 12,000 years, Vega will. Polaris itself will come closest to the pole around 2100 and then gradually drift away.
For such a famous star, Polaris is fairly faint, only about second magnitude, and it is surprisingly hard to pin down. It is a Cepheid variable that brightens and fades over about four days, and a faint companion orbits it every 30 years or so. Astronomers long disagreed on how far away it is. Hipparcos data suggested about 430 light-years, whereas a 2013 analysis argued for about 320.
Later Gaia data fell close to the Hipparcos figure. The companion has been more helpful. By tracking it, astronomers in 2024 estimated Polaris's mass at about 5.1 times that of the Sun.
