In a famous video, viewers count how many times a team in white shirts passes a basketball. In the middle, a person in a gorilla suit walks into the scene, hits their chest and walks away.
About half of the viewers do not see the gorilla. When we focus on one thing, we can miss things right in front of our eyes. Even doctors missed a gorilla hidden in medical pictures.

Q1. What is the passage mainly about?
Q2. What do viewers count in the video?
viewers count how many times a team in white shirts passes a basketball とあるので A。
Q3. In this passage, "focus on" means ...
In a 1999 study, people watched a short video of students passing basketballs and counted the passes made by the team in white. Halfway through, a person in a gorilla suit walked into the middle of the scene, beat their chest and walked off.
The gorilla was on screen for about nine seconds. About half of the viewers did not notice it. This is called inattentional blindness. A similar effect, called change blindness, was shown in 1998. A researcher asked a stranger for directions.
Then two workers carried a door between them, and the researcher was replaced by someone else. About half of the strangers did not notice. In 2013, 83 percent of radiologists searching lung scans for signs of cancer missed a gorilla drawn into one of the images.

Q1. How long was the gorilla visible in the video?
The gorilla was on screen for about nine seconds とあるので B。
Q2. What happened in the 1998 study?
the researcher was replaced by someone else とあるので A。
Q3. What can we infer from the radiologist study?
Our eyes are not cameras that record everything in front of them; we consciously see mainly what we attend to. This was dramatically demonstrated in 1999, when Simons and Chabris asked viewers to count passes made by one team in a 75-second basketball video. Midway through, a person in a gorilla suit strolled to the center, thumped their chest and walked off, remaining on screen for about nine seconds. Roughly half of the viewers failed to notice, a phenomenon called inattentional blindness.
A related effect, change blindness, appeared in a 1998 field study in which about half of the pedestrians giving directions did not notice that the person they were talking to had been swapped while a door was carried between them. Expertise offers little protection. In 2013, 83 percent of radiologists searching lung scans for nodules missed a gorilla 48 times larger than a typical nodule, and eye tracking showed that many had looked directly at it. Detection rates, however, depend heavily on task difficulty and on how similar the unexpected object is to what people are tracking; a black gorilla, for example, is noticed more often by viewers following the black team.
