同じように、「決断する」は do a decision ではなく make a decision、「写真を撮る」は take a picture。

In English, we say 'heavy rain', not 'strong rain'. Some words like to go together. These pairs are called collocations. Even advanced learners make mistakes with them. Often they translate directly from their first language.
But there is good news. In one study, students learned word pairs while they read and listened to stories. Students who met a pair 15 times remembered it much better.

英語では「strong rain」ではなく「heavy rain」と言います。一緒に使われやすい言葉があるのです。こうした組み合わせはコロケーションと呼ばれます。上級の学習者でさえ、コロケーションで間違えます。母語からそのまま訳してしまうことが多いのです。
でも、良い知らせもあります。ある研究では、学生たちは物語を読んだり聞いたりしながら語の組み合わせを覚えました。ある組み合わせに15回出会った学生は、それをずっとよく覚えていました。

Q1. What is the passage mainly about?
heavy rain のような、自然に一緒に使われる語の組み合わせ(コロケーション)の話なので B。
Q2. How many times did students meet a pair to remember it much better?
Students who met a pair 15 times remembered it much better. とあるので C。
Q3. In this passage, "translate directly" means to ...
母語の組み合わせを1語ずつそのまま英語に置き換えること(直訳)なので A。「強い雨」→ strong rain がその例。
Why do English speakers say 'heavy rain' and 'make a decision' instead of 'strong rain' and 'do a decision'? Such natural word combinations are called collocations, and they remain difficult even for advanced learners. In 2003, Nesselhauf analyzed essays by advanced German-speaking learners of English and found that many errors came from their first language.
A 2011 study of about 300,000 words written by Hebrew-speaking learners also found that first-language errors continued even at advanced levels. However, learners can pick up collocations from input. In a 2013 study, Taiwanese university students who met target collocations 15 times while reading and listening learned them much better.

なぜ英語話者は「strong rain」や「do a decision」ではなく、「heavy rain」や「make a decision」と言うのでしょうか。
Q1. According to Nesselhauf, where did many collocation errors come from?
found that many errors came from their first language とあるので D。
Q2. How much writing was analyzed in the 2011 study?
A 2011 study of about 300,000 words とあるので A。
Q3. What does the 2013 study suggest?
読みながら聞く中で15回出会った学生がよく覚えたことから、文脈の中で何度も出会うことが効果的とわかるので C。
Even advanced learners trip over collocations, the conventional pairings behind phrases such as 'heavy rain', 'take a break' and 'make a decision'. In 2003, Nesselhauf analyzed verb-noun combinations in essays by advanced German-speaking learners. Errors were common, and the first language played a far larger role than earlier small studies had suggested. A 2011 corpus study of roughly 300,000 words written by Hebrew-speaking learners told a similar story.
At every level, learners used far fewer collocations than native speakers, their use rose only at advanced levels, and errors caused by the first language persisted. That does not mean adults are unable to pick collocations up. Experiments show that they retain information about which words occurred together, so the gap with native speakers probably reflects limited input rather than a different way of learning.
How much input, then? In 2013, Webb, Newton and Chang had Taiwanese students read graded material while listening to it, meeting 18 target collocations 1, 5, 10 or 15 times. Because the students read and listened at once, the counts may not apply to reading or listening alone. Learning grew with the number of encounters, and 15 encounters produced substantial gains.

上級の学習者でさえ、コロケーションにはつまずきます。heavy rain、take a break、make a decision
