People started writing only about 5,000 years ago. That is too short a time for the brain to develop a special part for reading.
But when we learn to read, an area in the left side of the brain starts to react strongly to letters. In a 2010 study, this change happened even in people who learned to read as adults. You can change your brain at any age.

Q1. What is the passage mainly about?
Q2. When did people start writing, according to the passage?
People started writing only about 5,000 years ago.
Q3. In this passage, "react strongly to" means ...
Humans have been writing for only about 5,000 years. That is too short a time for the brain to evolve a special area for reading.
But people who can read do have a region on the left side of the brain that reacts strongly to written words. In 2010, researchers scanned 63 adults in Portugal and Brazil. Some could not read, some had learned as adults, and some had learned as children.
The better a person could read, the more this region responded to words. Many changes also appeared in people who learned as adults. A 2018 study of six-year-olds found that the reading area forms within months. It grows in a spot that was not strongly specialized before, so it does not take over the area for faces.

Q1. Why could our brains not have evolved a special reading area?
Humans have been writing for only about 5,000 years. That is too short a time ...
Q2. Who took part in the 2010 study?
Some could not read, some had learned as adults, and some had learned as children とあるので D。
Q3. What did the 2018 study suggest about the reading area?
It grows in a spot that was not strongly specialized before, so it does not take over the area for faces とあるので C。
Ten children were scanned six or seven times between the months before school and the end of first grade. Within months, a region tuned to letters appeared in weakly specialized cortex, without pushing aside the areas that respond to faces. The group was tiny, but this 2018 study supports the idea that reading recycles visual circuits we already have. It would have to, since writing emerged only about 5,000 years ago, far too recently for evolution to build a dedicated reading circuit.
In literate people, the key spot lies in the left fusiform gyrus, and Dehaene and colleagues call it the visual word form area. A 2010 fMRI study compared 63 adults in Portugal and Brazil. Ten were illiterate, 22 had learned to read as adults and 31 had learned in childhood.
Literacy boosted this region's response to text and slightly reduced its response to faces. It also strengthened activity across visual areas, even the primary visual cortex, and increased responses to spoken language. Many of these effects showed up in the adult learners too. That study was cross-sectional, so differences in education and social background could account for part of the results.

Q2. What did literacy do to the region's response to faces in the 2010 study?
slightly reduced its response to faces とあるので B。
Q3. Why should the 2010 results be interpreted with care?
That study was cross-sectional, so differences in education and social background could account for part of the results とあるので D。
