Q1. What happened when the online shopping site used machine translation?
helped an online shopping site sell about 11% more to other countries とあるので A。
Q2. What was found in the hospital study?
translated instructions sometimes had serious mistakes とあるので C。
Q3. What does the writer say about translation apps?
Use translation apps to check your own English, not to replace it. とあるので D。
With powerful translation apps in our pockets, some people wonder whether learning English is still necessary. Machine translation is impressive. When an online shopping platform introduced a new translation system, researchers estimated that exports increased by about 11%, showing how much language barriers had been blocking trade.
However, a 2019 study of emergency room discharge instructions translated by Google Translate found that the Spanish versions were mostly accurate, while the Chinese versions had more errors, including some that could seriously harm patients. Noticing such mistakes requires language skills. In a 2020 study in Korea, university students first translated texts into English by themselves and then compared their work with machine translation. This reduced their vocabulary and grammar errors. Used wisely, translation tools can support learning rather than replace it.

Q1. What does the 11% increase in exports show?
showing how much language barriers had been blocking trade とあるので B。
Q2. How did the Korean students use machine translation?
first translated texts into English by themselves and then compared their work with machine translation とあるので A。
Q3. What is the writer's main message?
最終文 translation tools can support learning rather than replace it と一致するので C。
When a major online marketplace switched on an improved machine translation system, its exports rose by an estimated 10.9%. That figure comes from Brynjolfsson and colleagues, who found the gain consistent with one change: crossing a language barrier had become cheaper.
So is learning English now optional? Accuracy is uneven. In a 2019 study, researchers ran emergency department discharge instructions through Google Translate. The Spanish versions were largely accurate. The Chinese versions contained more errors, and some of them could have caused significant harm. That test used an earlier generation of technology, and today's systems may do better.
But someone still has to check a translation when the stakes are high, and spotting an error takes knowledge of the language. Studies of learners fit this view. Korean university students who translated passages on their own before comparing their work with machine output made fewer lexical and grammatical errors.
A 2023 systematic review reached a similar verdict, finding that these tools can support learning when their use is guided. Software converts words quickly. Deciding whether a translated discharge sheet is safe to hand to a patient takes a person who reads both languages.
