When you raise your right hand in front of a mirror, the person in the mirror seems to raise the left hand. But your head is not upside down.
Why? A mirror does not really change left and right. It only changes front and back. One idea is that we feel left and right are reversed because we imagine turning around to stand in the mirror person's place.

Q1. What is the passage mainly about?
Q2. What does a mirror really change?
It only changes front and back.
Q3. In this passage, "reversed" means ...
Why does a mirror seem to switch left and right but not up and down? Physically, a mirror reverses only the direction toward and away from it, that is, front and back. Your right hand still appears on the right side, and your head still appears at the top.
One explanation for the left-right feeling is that we imagine walking around to the other side of the mirror and turning to face ourselves. In 2007, Japanese psychologists asked more than 100 university students whether mirror images of people and of letters looked reversed. Almost everyone said letters looked reversed, but a large share said the image of a person did not. This suggests that different mental processes are involved.

Q2. In the 2007 study, what did almost everyone say?
Almost everyone said letters looked reversed とあるので D。
Q3. What can we infer from the passage?
Why mirrors appear to reverse left and right, but not up and down, has puzzled researchers for decades. Physically, the answer is simple: a mirror reverses only the axis perpendicular to its surface, front and back. If you point right, up and toward the mirror, only the last direction is inverted in the reflection. The perceived left-right reversal must therefore arise in the observer's mind.
One common account holds that we mentally rotate ourselves around a vertical axis to occupy the position of the figure in the mirror; because our bodies are roughly symmetrical left to right but not top to bottom, this rotation is the natural choice, and it swaps our hands. Other proposals have emphasized the priority of certain axes or the physical rotation of objects held up to a mirror.
In 1998, the Japanese psychologist Takano argued that mirror reversal consists of several distinct phenomena. In a 2007 study with 102 and 52 students, nearly all participants judged mirrored letters as reversed, but a substantial proportion did not see a person's image as reversed, a result the authors found inconsistent with the axis and rotation accounts. Critics have responded, however, and the debate continues.
