This is VOA News. I’m Michael Brown. More help is on the way for thousands left homeless in Hawaii by those deadly wildfires in Maui. VOA’s Diane Roberts has more. Authorities hope to empty crowded, uncomfortable group shelters by early next week and move displaced people into hotel rooms.

According to the vice president for disaster operations with the American Red Cross, he said hotels are also available for eligible evacuees who have spent the last eight days sleeping in cars or camping in parking lots. Contracts with the hotels will last for at least seven months, but could easily be extended, he said.

The properties will be staffed by service providers who will offer meals, counseling, financial assistance and other disaster aid. Hawaii Governor Josh Green has said at least 1 ,000 hotel rooms will be set aside for those who lost their homes. Diane Roberts, VOA News.

The Maui fires incinerated the historic community of Lahaina and killed more than 100 people. President Joe Biden is said to arrive in Maui Monday. Former U .S. President Donald Trump has canceled his press conference on election fraud claims.

AP correspondent Ben Thomas reports. Trump had promised to unveil new evidence of fraud in the 2020 election in Georgia, but citing the advice of lawyers, the former president says he won’t be holding a press conference about it next week.

Rather, he says what he describes as irrefutable and overwhelming evidence will be included in legal filings arguing for the case to be dismissed. No compelling evidence of the wide -scale fraud Trump alleges has emerged in the two and a half years since the election, and Republican officials in the state, with three recounts confirmed Trump’s loss to President Biden, have long said he lost legitimately.

Analysts say regional countries are facing a crisis of legitimacy as they run out of options and time to restore democratic rule in this year after soldiers ousted the president last month.

AP correspondent Charles De La Desma reports. As time drags on, with no military action and a standstill in negotiations, the Hunters entrenching its power, leaving the West African regional bloc Iqawaz with few choices.

Andrew Libovic, a research fellow with the Klingendale Institute, thinks Iqawaz has few good options, particularly as the Hunters seem unwilling for a moment to cede to outside pressure.

An intervention could backfire and damage the organization in many ways, while a failure to extract major concessions from the Hunter could weaken the organization politically at an already fragile time. I’m Charles De La Desma. The United Nations Security Council says people are starving in North Korea as their government ramps up its military programs and becomes more repressive.

AP correspondent Jackie Quinn has that story. Human rights chief Volker Turk says the people of North Korea have endured economic hardship and government repression, but now it’s both. Increasing repression of the rights to freedom of expression, privacy and movement.

UN special investigator on human rights in North Korea, Elizabeth Salmon. Some people are starving, others have died due to a combination of malnutrition, diseases. US ambassador Linda Thomas Greenfield blames Kim Jong -un and his quest for military dominance.

Powered by repression and cruelty. The UN Security Council took no action but agreed to hold the North Korean government accountable. I’m Jackie Quinn. Haitian aid groups backed by the International Rescue Committee are temporarily shutting down operations, including some mobile health clinics, following days of extreme violence in parts of the Caribbean nation’s capital, Port -au -Prince.

Haiti’s undergun police have struggled against heavily armed gangs that have dramatically expanded their territory since last year. With their turf wars driving mass displacements, severe food shortages, murders, kidnappings and sexual violence. The United States on Thursday imposed new sanctions on four Russian security agents it accused of being involved in the 2020 poisoning of imprisoned opposition leader Alexei Navalny.

The longtime critic of President Vladimir Putin was detained back in January 2021 after returning to Moscow from Germany where doctors had treated him for what they say was poisoning by a Soviet -era nerve agent. For more news as always we invite you to join us at our website voanews .com.

SUMMARY

The news article from VOA covers a range of topics including natural disasters, political controversies, and humanitarian crises.

In Hawaii, help is being provided to thousands of people left homeless by wildfires in Maui. Authorities are planning to move displaced people into hotel rooms, with contracts lasting at least seven months. Over 1,000 hotel rooms will be reserved for those affected.

The Maui fires have devastated the historic community of Lahaina, resulting in over 100 deaths. President Biden is expected to visit Maui soon. Meanwhile, former President Trump has cancelled a press conference on election fraud claims, stating that the evidence will be included in legal filings instead.

The article also discusses the political instability in some regional countries, where democratic rule is under threat after military coups. The situation is particularly tense in West Africa, where a regional bloc is struggling to exert influence.

In North Korea, the government’s focus on military programs and increasing repression is leading to widespread starvation among the population. The UN Security Council has agreed to hold the North Korean government accountable, but has not taken any action yet.

In Haiti, aid operations backed by the International Rescue Committee are being temporarily shut down due to extreme violence in the capital, Port-au-Prince. The police force is struggling against heavily armed gangs, leading to mass displacements, food shortages, and violence.

Lastly, new sanctions have been imposed by the U.S. on four Russian security agents implicated in the 2020 poisoning of opposition leader Alexei Navalny.
