There’s an English expression “shady job,” which directly translates to “suspicious work” but carries a meaning close to the Japanese term “yami baito” (dark part-time job). It refers to highly illegal work that could lead to criminal activities.
Recently, I heard about a young person arrested for engaging in such a “shady job,” and it pained my heart. He was struggling with poverty and financial difficulties, but out of shame, couldn’t consult those around him, ultimately resorting to this illegal work.
This young person’s thinking reflects a microcosm of modern Japanese society. Ashamed to rely on welfare, people instead turn to crime. Isn’t this the epitome of a society built on self-responsibility?
In English-speaking countries, there’s also the term “illegal part-time job,” which more directly indicates illegality. However, beyond the difference in terminology, the essence of this problem remains the same: the existence of young people struggling on the border between poverty and crime.
To solve this issue, strengthening society’s safety net is essential. It’s crucial to create an environment where people can seek support without hesitation when facing economic hardship. Simultaneously, we need to listen to the voices of young people and build flexible support systems that can address the real challenges they face.
A society where the term “yami baito” itself disappears would be a society where everyone can live with peace of mind. Towards realizing such a society, what should each of us do? Perhaps now is the time to seriously consider and take action.
