“cut to the chase”という言葉は、もともとアメリカのハリウッド映画業界で生まれた表現です。20世紀初頭のアメリカの無声映画（喜劇映画）のクライマックスが「追跡シーン(chase sequence)」だったり、また脈絡がなく突然追跡シーンが始まることが多かったことから、「そんな追跡シーンなどカットしろ」＝「さっさと本題にはいろう」という意味になったわけです。
